Elkins City Hall move-in date pushed back

ELKINS — The anticipated move-in date for Elkins City Hall will be postponed until September after an equipment malfunction damaged the front of the building this week, officials report.
During Elkins City Council’s Thursday night meeting, City Operations Manager Michael Kesecker reported that, between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Wednesday, a hydraulic lift used by the masonry company working on the City Hall malfunctioned and caused damage to the building.

Barbour County coal mine evacuated

VOLGA – A coal mine in Barbour County was evacuated Wednesday morning after carbon monoxidc was detected at the site.
Officials evacuated the Longview Mine in Volga after a monitoring system indicated elevated levels of carbon monoxide within the mine, according to information released by Allegheny Metallurgical, the mine’s owner.
No one was injured in the incident, officials said, adding that state and federal agencies were at the mine by Wednesday evening to investigate the situation.

ELKINS — Elkins Mayor Jerry Marco has been sworn in as the 2026-2027 president of the West Virginia Municipal League, and the organization’s next annual convention will take place in Elkins.

ELKINS — Mary Harris, also known as Mother Jones (1830-1930), labor activist, will be portrayed by Karen Vuranch of Fayetteville on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. at The Arts Center in Elkins.
The free presentation is part of the History Alive! program of the West Virginia Humanities Council and is sponsored by Randolph County Democrats in honor of Labor Day.

Grand jury to hear case of theft from local church

ELKINS — A Randolph County grand jury will hear the case against a Randolph County man accused of stealing medical equipment from a local church.
Stephen Gaylord Hinkle, 55, of Elkins, is charged with one count of grand larceny. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $15,000 10% cash bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Tracy Harper.

Director says state code limits $5M flood fund

CHARLESTON – After four years, a fund created by the West Virginia Legislature to proactively address flood mitigation has money, but the state director charged with leading flood resiliency efforts told lawmakers his office needs more flexibility to use the funds.
The Joint Legislative Committee on Flooding received a report Tuesday morning from Robert Martin, director of the State Resiliency Office, on the final day of legislative interim meetings at the State Capitol Building.

Maryland man charged for drugs in Tucker County

PARSONS — A Maryland man is facing a felony charge in Tucker County after officers allegedly found more than 100 grams of possible fentanyl with a value of over $14,000 in his vehicle.
Kadeem Roderick Santiful, of Randallstown, Maryland, 33, is charged with one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000 cash-only bond.

Free Elkins Friday concert canceled due to rainy forecast

ELKINS – This week’s free Our Town Summer Concert Series show has been canceled due to a rainy weather forecast.
The Hair Supply show, which was set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Rotary Amphitheatre in downtown Elkins, will not take place.
