Mountain School residents help preserve Rosie statue

ELKINS – A team of local volunteers has joined forces with a group of residents from the Elkins Mountain School on a statue preservation and beautification project for the Rosie the Riveter Statue that stands in the All-Veterans Memorial Park.
Local volunteers Linda Shomo, Mary Higgins and Tammy Dolly made up the “Rosie Team” that spearheaded the project and recruited the Mountain School boys and their supervisor, Carrie Moore.

Teens win titles at Miss WV event

MARTINSBURG — Elizabeth Romanek beamed, as she was crowned the winner of the Miss West Virginia Competition, at Airborne Church on Saturday night.
Her win was not a surprise to many, after the Miss Morgantown contestant won the talent portion of the competition, during its preliminary round. Her talent, a jazz routine to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” was precise and dynamic — as was the case with the rest of her presentation on the competition stage.

ELKINS – Frank Hatten, MS, Director of Operations and Outreach for the Cyber-Resilience Resource Center (CRRC) and Adjunct Professor of Cybersecurity at West Virginia University, addressed the Rotary Club of Elkins, describing how the Center helps organizations across the state strengthen their cybersecurity.

Corridor H Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

KERENS — The 11-mile stretch of Corridor H between Kerens and Parsons is now open after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday afternoon.
More than 100 local leaders, representatives and members of the community attended the opening of the latest finished section of Corridor H, which will allow motorists to travel from Kerens in Randolph County to Parsons in Tucker County. The ceremony took place on the first bridge of the newly completed section, which is now fully open to drivers.

Crews perform Audra State Park rescue

BELINGTON — Emergency responders spent hours Saturday rescuing an individual who was injured along a walking trail at Audra State Park.
Barbour County 911 received an emergency text around 7:16 p.m. Saturday and crews were dispatched to the the state park, according to a release from the Belington Volunteer Fire Department. Barbour man allegedly threatened neighbors, police

BELINGTON – A Barbour County man is in jail after being accused of threatening his neighbors and then multiple police officers.
Kyle Christopher Steven Burke, 43, of Belington, has been charged with two counts of wanton endangerment, and six counts of threats of terroristic acts, all felonies. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.

City of Elkins addresses funding requests

ELKINS – The City of Elkins has adopted a new policy for how City employees should respond to ad hoc financing requests.
During the last Elkins City Council meeting, eight of the nine present council members voted in favor of Resolution 1930, which establishes a new policy for addressing such ad hoc funding requests. Second Ward representative Lisa Severino voted against the resolution. First Ward Council member Robert Chenoweth was absent from the meeting.

EHS student receives Kindness Scholarship

ELKINS — An Elkins High School student has been named as the recipient of the eighth annual Austen Moore Kindness Scholarship.
Raighan Hall Carte will receive the full scholarship amount of $2,500.
“Why celebrate kindness with a scholarship?” Joanne Gabel, a member of the scholarship committee, said during the presentation ceremony. “We believe it is a way to reward the kindness shown by the young people who are a part of our community.”
