Rumbaugh grilled over DMV contract

CHARLESTON – Lawmakers on Monday raised a number of concerns about the price tag of a new system meant to modernize computer records maintained by the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.
Todd Rumbaugh, the cabinet secretary of the state Department of Transportation, answered questions from members of the Joint Standing Committee on Finance on the second day of legislative interim meetings at the State Capitol Building.

Flood watch issued until Friday

ELKINS – Booming thunder woke many area residents in the early morning hours Tuesday as storms passed through the region.     
Some areas of Randolph County received close to two inches of rain between midnight and residents’ early morning commutes, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston.   
“It seems like on average, we received at least an inch and a quarter (of rain overnight) with some locally higher spots that were close to two inches,” Megan Kiebler, the lead meteorologist

Criss files as a write-in candidate

CHARLESTON – House of Delegates Finance Committee Chairman Vernon Criss filed paperwork Monday afternoon to run as a write-in candidate for the 12th District seat he occupies after losing the May Republican primary to Charles Hartzog.
Criss, R-Wood, was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1987, serving until 1990. After 26 years, the Wood County businessman returned to the House, winning election in 2016.

Elkins woman sentenced to probation, anger management

ELKINS — A Randolph County woman has been sentenced to three years of supervise probation, including anger management, after intentionally causing a head-on vehicle collision in February 2025.
Stephanie Louise Miller, 42, of Elkins, was sentenced by Randolph County Circuit Court Judge David Wilmoth to no less than one, and no more than five years of incarceration for one count of unlawful assault, a felony.

Upshur County Disaster Recovery Center closed today

BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Disaster Recovery Center (DRC), located at 21 E. Main Street, will close for the remainder of today due to inclement weather, officials said.
At this time, the DRC is expected to reopen Wednesday under its regular operating hours (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Officials will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if anything changes.

Substantial Damage Determinations to begin in Upshur

BUCKHANNON — Officials announced Monday afternoon that Substantial Damage Determinations will begin this week in Upshur County for homes and businesses affected by the severe flooding of July 21.
“Local officials previously conducted Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDAs) to estimate the overall extent and impact of storm‑related damages,” a joint release from the City of Buckhannon and Upshur County stated.

Grand jury to hear attempted murder charge

ELKINS — Probable cause has been found in the case of a Barbour County woman accused of attempted murder after allegedly shooting another woman in the face during an altercation near Pickens.
Regina Lea Collette, 45, of Philippi, has been charged with attempted murder, a felony. She is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond, set by Randolph County Magistrate Tracy M. Harper.
