Morning storm knocks out power for thousands of local homes

ELKINS – This morning’s severe rain and wind storm has knocked out electricity for thousands of homes in multiple local counties.
In Randolph County, 1,735 residences were without power as of 9:25 a.m., according to First Energy.
A total of 295 homes without electricity were reported in Mill Creek, with 276 reported in Beverly, 268 in Coalton, 255 in Mabie, 164 in Elkins, 140 in Whitmer, 104 in Harman and 73 in Valley Bend.
In Upshur County, 1,440 homes were without power, officials said.

Agencies target millions in savings

CHARLESTON – Officials leading several West Virginia departments and agencies briefed lawmakers Monday after audits released last month by Gov. Patrick Morrisey found more than $168 million in potential savings.
Members of the West Virginia Legislature settled into the mountains of Tucker County for three days of interim meetings at Canaan Valley Resort State Park in Davis beginning Sunday and wrapping up Tuesday.

Randolph man accused of breaking into hotel

ELKINS — A Randolph County man is facing a felony charge after allegedly breaking in and stealing items, including a television, from a local hotel.
Joshua Richard Slayton, 32, is charged with one count of breaking and entering, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

Upshur man charged with strangulation

BUCKHANNON — An Upshur County man faces a felony charge after allegedly strangling a woman.
Blaine Tabor Browning, 39, is charged with one count of strangulation, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Patrolman Dylan Ray Major with the Buckhannon City Police Department, on June 10, Major responded to a reported domestic at Zickefoose Trailer Park in Buckhannon.

EHS student selected to attend Girls Nation

ELKINS – Earning trips to different parts of the United States for her accomplishments is nothing new for Elkins High School student Juliann Harlan.
Harlan, who will be a senior at EHS in the upcoming school year, recently took part in Rhododendron Girls State, held at Davis & Elkins College. 31st annual Coalton Days celebration set for Saturday

COALTON – The town of Coalton will come to life Saturday when visitors from near and far gather for the 31st annual Coalton Days celebration.

21 to compete in Coalton Days pageants

COALTON – The 31st annual Coalton Days Sunday Best & Miss Coalton Pageant will begin at 6 p.m. on June 18 in the Coalton school gymnasium. This year’s theme will be “Hollywood red carpet.”
