Events to highlight history of Elkins

Kump Education Center is planning a fall series of lectures about the history of Elkins. The first speech on the geological history of Elkins by Dr. Jim VanGundy will be held on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Learning Lab at Kump Education Center.
Dr. VanGundy was a professor of geology on the Davis & Elkins College faculty. Since he retired, Dr. VanGundy has been traveling and writing about scenic West Virginia. The second ddition of his book, “The Nature and Scenery of the West Virginia

Accident pushes back City Hall move-in

ELKINS — The anticipated move-in date for Elkins City Hall has been postponed until September after an equipment accident damaged the front of the building this week, officials report.
During Elkins City Council’s Thursday night meeting, City Operations Manager Michael Kesecker reported that, between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Wednesday, a hydraulic lift used by the masonry company working on City Hall had malfunctioned and caused damage to the building.

90th Birthday

Come celebrate the 90th birthday of Andy Wamsley with family and friends. The celebration will be on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dailey Fire Hall.
Andy had the privilege of being married to Janice for 70 years prior to her passing in 2024. They have four children, all of whom live on the Wamsley farm in Valley Bend. They include Tom (Jane), Cheri (Garry Shiflett), Steve (Lisa) and Marc (Amie). They were also blessed with nine grandchildren, one, Crystal, being deceased.

Morrisey extends State of Emergency in 12 counties

CHARLESTON – Governor Patrick Morrisey on Friday morning announced the State of Emergency will be extended in 12 counties — including Upshur, Barbour, Randolph and Tucker — following the severe storms and flooding that struck West Virginia beginning July 21.

Official: Barbour mine evacuated, fire causing issues

VOLGA – A coal mine in Barbour County was evacuated Wednesday morning after carbon monoxide was detected at the site, and officials said Thursday the issues are likely being caused by a fire in the mine.     
Officials evacuated the Longview Mine in Volga between around 3 a.m. Wednesday after a monitoring system indicated elevated levels of carbon monoxide within the mine, according to information released by Allegheny Metallurgical, the mine’s owner.

Officials unveil new data center principles

CHARLESTON – While several states are rushing to place moratoriums on data center development, Gov. Patrick Morrisey and legislative leaders unveiled a seven-point set of principles to guide the state data center program.

Child abuse case going to grand jury

ELKINS — A grand jury will hear a case involving a Beverly man accused of child abuse after a juvenile in the care of he and his wife was allegedly found bound by zip ties in a bathroom.
Manuel Ortiz Jr., 69, of Beverly, is charged with one count of child abuse creating risk of bodily injury, and one count of conspiracy, both felonies. Ortiz was being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $150,000 cash-only bond that has since been posted.
