Manuel case going to grand jury

ELKINS — A grand jury will hear a case involving a Randolph County man accused of allegedly cashing an already deposited check that belonged to a deceased man.
Richard Allan Manuel, known as “Opie,” 53, is charged with one count of forging or uttering other writing, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $2,500 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Benjamin Shepler.

Officials: Middle Fork River in Ellamore is flooding

ELLAMORE – Randolph County officials announced this morning that the Middle Fork River in Ellamore is flooding.
A message from the Randolph County Office of Emergency Management and 911 Monday morning stated, “The Middle Fork River in Ellamore has risen to Action stage at 12.77 ft; Flood stage is 13 ft. Anyone living along the river is urged to self evacuate and move to higher ground, flooding is imminent. DO NOT drive through flood waters.”

Buckhannon’s parks to reopen by Labor Day

BUCKHANNON — City officials say Buckhannon’s parks – which were flooded during the July 21 severe storms – will reopen to the public before Labor Day.
The City of Buckhannon announced that Jawbone Park and the North Buckhannon Riverfront Park will officially reopen on Friday, Sept. 4, just in time for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.
Both parks have been closed since the July 21 flooding to allow for “extensive cleanup, sanitation, and safety assessments,” a City of Buckhannon press release

State liaison assigned after contract controversy

CHARLESTON — Marion County Schools avoiding becoming the latest school to be placed in a state of emergency or direct intervention by the West Virginia Board of Education, but it will be watched closely.

Upshur residents charged with child abuse, animal cruelty

BUCKHANNON — An Upshur County man and woman face abuse charges after police allegedly found a child and animals in their care living in “repulsive” conditions.
Dakota Ray Mcie, 23, and Ciarra Marueen Lacey, 22, are both charged with one count of child abuse creating risk of injury, a felony. They are also both charged with one count of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor.

Special Water Board meeting set for Tuesday

ELKINS — An open special meeting will take place Tuesday morning to discuss Elkins’ current and possible future water sources.
According to an Elkins City Hall release, the Elkins Water Department and Water Board will be holding a “special meeting” on Tuesday to discuss Elkins’ source water and “potential for new raw water sources in the future.”
The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Phil Gainer Community Center from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Flood waters return to region

ELKINS – Heavy rain on Saturday night into Sunday morning caused high waters to inflict more damage on our region, which was the site of deadly flooding on July 21.
On Sunday afternoon, multiple trees were down due to high winds, and several roads were closed by flood waters around the local area.
In Randolph County, US 219 near the Elkins Speedway in Kerens was closed to traffic Sunday afternoon due to high water.

Flood warning issued until 6:15 p.m.

ELKINS – A flood warning has been issued for the local area until 6:15 p.m. today.
The flood warning, issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston, is for Southeastern Barbour County and Northeastern Randolph County.
The warning states that flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.

Shared Birthdays

A surprise birthday party was given by Shirley Cooper for Norma Belt and Halene Ogden at the Gospel Light Tabernacle fellowship hall on July 12, 2026, after the morning church service.
Along with Shirley, Becky Belt and her son, Tyler Belt, helped to decorate the fellowship hall with pink and white balloons and tablecloths. Tyler suspended flowers from the ceiling of the entrance into the fellowship hall to greet the lades as they walked in.
The ladies were escorted to a table set for two.
