ACLU-WV to sue over school funding

CHARLESTON – More than 44 years ago, a decision handed down by an Ohio County judge led to an overhaul of how West Virginia funds its 55 county school systems. Advocates for better school funding believe a new lawsuit is warranted to fix new disparities.

McCuskey shifts future opioid funds

CHARLESTON — More than four years after state, county and city leaders agreed to create a private non-profit foundation to distribute millions of dollars in opioid settlement dollars, West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey announced a change in how future settlement dollars are distributed.

Rosie the Riveter group donates book to library

ELKINS – A group of former Rosie the Riveter Committee members recently donated a book to the Elkins-Randolph County Public Library that details information about Rosie the Riveters from the local area.   
The book, titled “Rosie the Riveter, Randolph County Honor Roll 2021-2025,” contains biographical information and photos of 45 Randolph County women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II.

Probable cause found in fleeing case

ELKINS — A Randolph County grand jury will hear the case against a woman accused of fleeing from police in May during a high-speed pursuit.
Alexis Rachele Thompson, 36, is charged with one count of fleeing with reckless indifference, a felony. She is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $30,000 cash-only bond.

Driver: ‘No complaints’ about electric buses

ELKINS – The Randolph County Board of Education received positive feedback from county personnel Tuesday about electric school buses – including a driver saying he had no complaints about the vehicles.

Randolph man facing felony drug charge

ELKINS – A Randolph County man is facing a felony charge after allegedly being found with drugs while bicycling through Elkins.
Eric Lynn Armstrong, 43, has been charged with prohibited acts – controlled substance, a felony. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond, set by Magistrate Mike Dyer.

WVU has ‘legitimate’ competition at placekicker

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s spring practices were for experimentation and figuring out what needs solving in the fall. Nothing regarding the depth chart is written in ink in the spring. ELKINS – Davis & Elkins College welcomed new and returning students to campus Aug. 14-16 with a variety of Welcome Weekend activities centered on the theme “Grow Where You’re Planted.”

EHS Corn Roast set at City Park Saturday

ELKINS – A decades-long tradition will continue Saturday when the Elkins Area Band Auxiliary hosts its annual Corn Roast at Elkins City Park.     
This year’s event will run from noon to 2 p.m. and will feature performances from both the Elkins High School Band and Elkins Middle School Band. The EMS Hornets will perform at 1 p.m., followed by the EHS Tigers at 1:30 p.m.
