Hints From Heloise

Getting those steps in
Dear Heloise: After having total knee replacement surgery, I bought a small treadmill that goes under my desk. Since it doesn’t have anything to hold onto, I placed a walker over the top to steady it as I walk. It works like a charm! — Marie G., in Connecticut

Hints From Heloise

Check out tips on traveling solo
Dear Heloise: In response to the person who was wondering about traveling solo, there are several online groups on Facebook for people who travel solo, as well as tour groups that cater to solo travelers. There is one group that specifically offers tours to women traveling solo for both domestic and international travel.
Also, the tours offered by Road Scholars often include solo travelers. I hope this encourages those who want to step out on their own but are in

Real crisis of home affordability

Homeowners vote red. Renters vote blue.
Will President Donald Trump’s 50-year mortgage make a red voter out of you?
That is what the president hoped on Saturday, when he posted the idea of stretching out the customary 30-year repayment terms for home mortgages to 50 years.
Turns out, that idea is smoke and mirrors. But at least Trump is recognizing that home affordability is a real crisis, not fake news.
“Affordability” is the campaign pledge that produced big wins on election day, and most

CHARLESTON — Congress is one step closer to ending the federal government shutdown with a vote on a continuing resolution now moving through the process. But West Virginians relying on the program formerly known as food stamps may have to wait longer for relief.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Monday during a press conference at the State Capitol Building that issues between two different state vendors used by the Department of Human Services (DoHS) are preventing the state from re-calculating

Slick Wintry Roads

HAMBLETON — The first major cold spell of the winter season saw a series of accidents and vehicle trouble throughout the area, including an hours-long road closure that left Tucker County High School students stuck on campus Monday evening.
A direct shot of Arctic air affecting the eastern two-thirds of the country migrated east and southeast over the weekend, according to the Associated Press. Both east and southeast areas of the country were hit with gusty chills and snow.

Harman charter proposal

Earlier this year, I wrote a bill to help save the Harman School, and it passed. Last December, I authored a detailed article about how to save the school while simultaneously avoiding the financial problems the county is facing. This was to be accomplished through the charter school program in West Virginia.
However, by the time discussions about closing the Harman School began last year, the deadline had already passed. It was a no-go.
A school that seeks to become a charter school must submit
