Outgrowing an old friend group

Dear Annie: I’ve been friends with the same group of women since our children were in grade school. We’re now in our late 50s and early 60s, and for years this group has been my main social circle. We’ve shared weddings, divorces, illnesses and losses. I will always value them for that.
Lately, though, I find myself dreading our get-togethers. The conversation has narrowed to a steady loop of complaints — about spouses, adult children, politics, health problems, you name it. When I try to change

Lasting impact

Every career begins with a defining moment, an instant when preparation meets courage and the future quietly changes course.
For me, that moment came in 1983, when, at just 21 years old, I brought Richard Pryor to speak before more than 1,500 employees at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. I was young, untested and responsible for selecting a keynote speaker. Instead of choosing the safe or expected option, I took a risk and set my sights on Pryor — not the comedian the world

Hopeful Sign

Are you tired of the cold and snow?
Have you had it with experiencing, day-after-day, weather forecasts that call for overnight temperatures that start close to zero and afternoon temperatures that are consistently below freezing?
Have you resorted to cursing the groundhog and started to wonder out loud how the woolly bear caterpillars you so carefully studied last fall could have been so wrong?
Relax — spring is on the way.
And while we haven’t seen the grass in a couple of weeks and the trees

City Snow Removal

ELKINS — Elkins city officials say there is no threat that the Street Department will run out of road salt this winter.
Assistant Street Department Supervisor Jim Yorkey told The Inter-Mountain that the city acquired close to eight tons of road salt last week, enough to last for an extended period of time.
“To be honest, we probably have enough to get us through,” Yorkey said. “If we had 20 days in a row of us having to salt the roads everyday, we would be running a little tight. But the load we
