Gen Xers mourn death of The Cosby Show’’s Theo, actor Warner

DETROIT (AP) — For Black youth and teens growing up in the mid-1980s, “The Cosby Show” offered something rarely seen on television up until that time — a sitcom that placed characters who looked like them in a positive light.
And Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s “Theo Huxtable” was the character Generation X most related to. Fans took quickly to social media on Monday as news of Warner’s accidental drowning in Costa Rica spread.

Richard S. Harman, born Aug. 19, 1942, in Harman, West Virginia, died July 3, 2025, in Virginia Beach, the city he loved and called home for more than 40 years. He was in declining health.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater College in Virginia, and his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Harvard Law School. He was a lawyer in Norfolk, Virginia. He enjoyed participating in the Unitarian Universalist church.

Beef prices soar — and not just for grilling season

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Anyone firing up the grill this summer already knows hamburger patties and steaks are expensive, but the latest numbers show prices have climbed to record highs.
And experts say consumers shouldn’t expect much relief soon either.
The average price of a pound of ground beef rose to $6.12 in June, up nearly 12% from a year ago, according to U.S. government data. The average price of all uncooked beef steaks rose 8% to $11.49 per pound.

Philippi man charged with kidnapping

PHILIPPI – A Philippi resident is behind bars after allegedly kidnapping a man and forcing him to use meth for two days.
Joshua Alanceson Bennett, 43, of Philippi, is charged with kidnapping, a felony. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail without bond.
According to the criminal complaint, the alleged victim told police that he met Bennett, who he knew by the nickname “Jungle,” on the dating app Grinder. He said Bennett picked him up in Elkins, and then drove him to Philippi.

Paving prompting temporary road closures

RANDOLPH COUNTY – County Route 32/3 (Bonner Mountain Road) and CR 32/2 (Red Cross Road) in Dry Fork will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., today through Thursday, for paving.
Work will begin at the Randolph/Tucker line and end at the intersection of County Route 32/3 (Bonner Mountain Road) and State Route 32 (Appalachian Highway).
Emergency vehicles, school buses and United States Postal vehicles will be accommodated. All other motorists are to expect delays and/or seek alternate routes.

Man accused of smoking fentanyl on school property

MILL CREEK – A man was arrested Friday afternoon after allegedly smoking fentanyl on Tygarts Valley High School property.
Avery Nuell Hash III, 44, was charged with possession of fentanyl and loitering on school property. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.

Randolph to support fair, 4-H, soccer

ELKINS — The Randolph County Commission approved funding requests from multiple organizations during its most recent meeting, including the Randolph County Fair, the Seneca Soccer League and 4-H Camp Pioneer.
