All downhill from here

Last Thursday marked day 30, the halfway mark of the 60-day annual legislative session. It’s all downhill from now to midnight on Saturday, March 14, when the regular session adjourns sine die.
At the beginning of the session, I had a hard time predicting whether this session would be a flurry of action or be slow, but it appears slow and steady wins the race. That’s not terribly surprising given that this is a midterm election year. Lawmakers want to do enough to look like they’re doing

Hints From Heloise

Using dry-erase markers on mirrors
Dear Heloise: A lot of people use white boards to make lists and notes. But did you know that you can use dry-erase markers on your bathroom mirror? It’s easy to jot notes on the mirror while you’re getting ready for the day, and more than likely, you will be back in that same bathroom throughout the day to see your notes. Additionally, you can write inspirational notes to yourself on the shower wall above where the water hits. — Karen McV., via email

Huff has learned to take the highs, lows in stride

MORGANTOWN — There was a time, WVU guard Honor Huff admits, when a poor shooting night or a bad game ripped at his gut.
His team could have won by 20 points or just upset the best team in the conference, but if Huff’s stat line was 2 for 12 with four turnovers, he was going to feel a certain way about that.
“Last year, if I had a bad game, it was the end of the world,” Huff said Tuesday, as the Mountaineers were preparing for today’s 8:30 p.m. home game against Utah. “I didn’t care if we won or

Dems’ opportunity, if they can seize it

President Donald Trump’s approval rating is sinking and gasping for air. His average net approval stands at -13.7, which is lower than Joe Biden’s was at this point in his term. This matters beyond cosmic justice: The president’s approval rating is the best predictor of midterm election outcomes. When it falls below 50%, his party tends to lose seats, as in the 1982, 1994, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 elections.
So the Democratic Party, written off as dead by some a few months ago, stands poised

Struggling to revive our once-burning flame

Dear Annie: My husband and I have been together for more than 30 years. In the beginning, we were the couple who couldn’t keep our hands off each other. We smiled easily, held hands without thinking, and felt lucky just to be in the same room after a long day.
Somewhere between raising three kids, becoming grandparents, and moving into our mid-50s, that warmth faded. We still love each other, and neither of us wants to leave. But our marriage feels quiet in a way that scares me. We rarely touch.
