BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Athletic Trainers Association recently inducted two people with long-time ties to West Virginia Wesleyan College, Dr. Jean Fruh and Dr. Rae Emrick ‘95, into the WVATA Hall of Fame at its spring meeting held in Buckhannon.
Along with that, three WVWC students placed first in the WVATA 2026 Quiz Bowl – Shelby Genes ’26, Nicholas Gerosa ’26 and Hannah Murphy ’26, earning the honor to represent WVATA and WVWC at the MAATA District 3 Quiz Bowl.

CHARLESTON – People are being warned that 2026 could be a big year for tick bites and related illnesses, according to a press release from the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
With Lyme Disease Awareness Month having occurred last month, the CDC is continually urging the public to take steps to protect themselves and their families from tick bites, and the serious diseases they can cause, including Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted fever and alpha-gal syndrome, the press release
ELKINS – Weather permitting, the Elkins Train Depot Welcome Center will offer a 20th anniversary celebration on Friday at its location in Elkins Town Square.
The event will celebrate the Welcome Center’s official opening in 2006, and will coincide with Our Town’s first Summer Concert Series performance of the year, which is paired with a Cruise-in hosted by the Mountain State Street Machines.

ELKINS – As authorities continue to search for a local elderly man suffering from dementia, Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon released a statement asking for the public’s assistance.
James Hedrick, 82, was reported missing on Monday after he was last seen leaving Davis Medical Center in his black Subaru Forester bearing West Virginia registration 808111A. According to authorities, he traveled toward the Veterans Intersection after leaving the hospital.

BUCKHANNON – Tim Derico was sworn in as the new Upshur County Superintendent of Schools this week.
In April, West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt appointed Derico as the new Upshur superintendent, effective July 1. He was sworn in during Monday night’s Upshur County Board of Education meeting.
