Santa to visit Beverly

BEVERLY — The Beverly Volunteer Fire Department will be escorting Santa Clause across areas of Randolph County on Wednesday evening.
Fire Trucks with Santa and other Christmas characters are scheduled to depart the Beverly Fire Hall at approximately 5 p.m. Truck No. 1 is scheduled to make its first stop at Lavender Fields and then head to the Beverly Mobile Home Park. From there it will head to Burgess Mobile Home Park and then Scott’s Lake Road.

Pirates add two-time All-Star reliever Soto

PITTBURGH (AP) — Two-time All-Star reliever Gregory Soto and the Pittsburgh Pirates finalized a $7.75 million, one-year contract on Tuesday.
Soto gives the Pirates an experienced left-handed option in a bullpen that will get a makeover in 2026 after relievers Colin Holderman and Dauri Moreta were designated for assignment last month.

Mountain Lions remain second in coaches poll

ELKINS — The Tucker County boys are second in the West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association (WVSACA) first regular-season Class A basketball poll released on Monday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions, who were second in the preseason poll as well, dropped a 62-58 overtime decision at Mountain Ridge (Md.) to open the season last Friday.

City approves new nonprofit policy

ELKINS — The Elkins City Council approved a new policy for how the City administers contributions to outside partner organizations, which was recommended by the State Auditor.
During a recent City Council meeting, the nine present council members voted in favor of Resolution 1883, which authorizes “adopting a new policy for the administration of contributions to outside and partner organizations.” Third Ward Council member Christopher Lowther was absent from the meeting.

Overdose leads to felony charge

ELKINS — A Randolph County man is facing a felony neglect charge after allegedly overdosing in a bathroom while taking care of a juvenile.
Brandon Edward Hepler, 39, is charged with one count of child neglect with risk of serious bodily injury or death, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $15,000 cash-only bond set by Randolph County Magistrate Michael Dyer.
