Mark Steven Mullenax, 62, of Petersburg, West Virginia, passed away at his home on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg.
Funeral service will be on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract, West Virginia.

NASCAR’s first in-season tourney adds drama to Cup Series finish

Barbour residents charged with child neglect

JUNIOR – A Barbour County man and woman each face four counts of child neglect after four children, including a toddler, were found residing in a home full of dog urine and feces, police said.
Cheyenne Elizabeth Sutliff, 27, and Jimmie Lee Carpenter, 38, are each charged with four counts of child neglect, a felony.
Sutliff and Carpenter are both currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on separate $300,000 multiple 10% and surety bonds.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued through 10 p.m.

ELKINS – The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for half of West Virginia today.
The watch is in effect for Barbour, Pocahontas, Randolph, Tucker and Upshur counties until 10 p.m. tonight.
Other counties under the watch until 10 p.m. include Berkeley, Braxton, Clay, Fayette, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Lewis, McDowell, Mercer, Mineral, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Pendleton, Preston, Raleigh, Summers, Taylor, Webster and Wyoming.

Augusta Workshops are underway

ELKINS — The 52nd annual Augusta Summer Heritage Workshops officially got underway this week with Cajun & Creole and Classic Country Week.
2025 marks the final year the workshops will take place on the Davis & Elkins College campus. Activities will move to downtown Elkins in 2026 with the Augusta Heritage Center, located in the old Wilt Building on the corner of Davis Avenue and Third Street, serving as the hub.

Imposter uses AI to impersonate Secretary of State Rubio

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department is warning U.S. diplomats of attempts to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio and possibly other officials using technology driven by artificial intelligence, according to two senior officials and a cable sent last week to all embassies and consulates.

Fun Fourth

As anyone who happened to be in Elkins last Friday afternoon or evening would surely attest, the city had a big turnout for this year’s Fourth of July celebration.
The fun, family friendly activities began with the first-ever July 4th Parade organized by Citizens Promoting Community. The parade kicked off at 5 p.m., running from the intersection of 11th Street and South Davis Avenue, and ending at City Hall.

Fuzz Jones City Tournament

ELKINS — Zach Thompson’s RBI walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted top-seed Mountaineer Insurance to a 5-4 win over fourth-seed Elkins Fordland Tuesday night in Fuzz Jones City Tournament action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Fordland had scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead but Mountaineer answered with a single run in the home-half of the frame to force extra innings.

Elkins announces temporary road closure

ELKINS – The City of Elkins announced a temporary road closure on Barron Avenue on Wednesday due to Elkins City Water Department repairs.
The section of Barron Avenue between Wilcox Street and the railroad trestle will be closed starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday. The Elkins City Water Department will be making repairs in that area at that time.
The City of Elkins will update Elkins residents when the repair is completed.
