Memorial Day

It’s the end of a school year; perhaps it is the opening weekend for swimming pools; it’s a three-day break — an excuse to travel, grill out, invite a few friends over and relax.
It is Memorial Day weekend.
And on Monday, in the midst of all that summer celebration, we must remember “to observe Memorial Day by praying, according to [our] individual religious faith, for permanent peace,” as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reminds us.
It’s not much to ask from those of us who will be able

Stop making cents: U.S. Mint moves forward with plans to kill the penny

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration says making cents doesn’t make sense anymore.
The U.S. Mint has made its final order of penny blanks and plans to stop producing the coin when those run out, a Treasury Department official confirmed Thursday. This move comes as the cost of making pennies has increased markedly, by upward of 20% in 2024, according to the Treasury.
By stopping the penny’s production, the Treasury expects an immediate annual savings of $56 million in reduced material

Hints From Heloise

Reader writes in with garden hints
Dear Heloise: Here is what I do with coffee grounds in my 10-by-20-foot allotment garden. I use grounds from home and also pick them up from my local coffee shop. I dig them into my soil and put them around the base of my roses. I also put them in my worm bin; the worms love them, and it discourages mice from sneaking in.
One year, when I had a gopher invasion, I first killed the gopher with a trap, then dug out tunnels to where they crossed my fence line. I

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order to dismantle the Education Department and ordered the agency to reinstate employees who were fired in mass layoffs. The administration said it would challenge the ruling.

Colts’ owner Irsay dead at age of 65

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jim Irsay started his football career as a ball boy. He finished it as a team owner.
Along the way, the NFL’s music man created his own, unique brand.
Irsay worked his way up through the organization, learning how to run a football team, restoring the Colts’ once-proud tradition to glory and created what some have dubbed the greatest guitar collection on Earth — all while battling health issues and addictions to alcohol and painkillers.
On Wednesday, Irsay’s remarkable
