Hints From Heloise

Supermarket thief steals cart
Dear Heloise: M.W. writes that securing her purse in a shopping cart with the child safety straps works “unless they also take the cart.” When I was young (a good many years ago), I was holding my infant son and looking at greeting cards. I turned around to discover that my cart was no longer behind me! We found it at the back of the market.
On this day, my husband (who was elsewhere in the store) had not yet given me his cash as he usually did, and there were no

California bishop suspends Mass obligation due to immigration fears

LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Bernardino Bishop Alberto Rojas, who leads more than 1.5 million Catholics in Southern California, has formally excused parishioners from their weekly obligation to attend Mass following immigration detentions on two parish properties in the diocese.
The dispensation is a move usually reserved for extenuating circumstances, like the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. But Rojas says it’s necessary because the fear of being apprehended and possibly deported has swept

Detainees describe worms in food, sewage near beds inside ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

MIAMI (AP) — Worms in the food. Toilets that don’t flush, flooding floors with fecal waste. Days without a shower or prescription medicine. Mosquitoes and insects everywhere. Lights on all night. Air conditioners that suddenly shut off in the tropical heat. Detainees forced to use recorded phone lines to speak with their lawyers and loved ones.
Only days after President Donald Trump toured a new immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades that officials have dubbed “Alligator

Texas officials trying to figure out who’s missing from floods

(AP) — This week in Texas, estimates put the number of people still missing from the Hill Country floods at 161, a daunting figure atop at least 120 deaths confirmed by authorities.
But that missing person tally might not be as precise as it seems.
Confusion and uncertainty can take hold after a shocking disaster and, despite best efforts by local authorities, it can be difficult to pin down how many people reported missing are actually unaccounted for. Some people on a list after California’s

Rich Rod’s smooth transition to WVU

MORGANTOWN — Rich Rodriguez admits his return to West Virginia to coach the Mountaineers has him “feeling a little bit like Forrest Gump” he told the assembled media on hand as he opened the second of the Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas.
“It’s been 17 years,” he reminded them, and every now and then we all need to be reminded just how long Rodriguez’s banishment lasted. “I’ve been in the desert, in the Bayou and all over the place. But I’m back home now.”
That he passed over his term in “The

Drunk and defiant: Bar song tops charts

Every year, there’s a song of summer. It’s often something to argue over when conversation lags at the barbecue. In 2013, feminists attacked Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” for allegedly glamorizing sexual violence. “Blurred Lines” was a huge hit. According to Rolling Stone, “It held the whole world in its slightly skeevy grasp all summer long.”
This year’s summer sensation is a song titled, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by a group named Shaboozey. This hip-hop-meets-country song is about drinking and
