Hunger games a disgrace

There are an estimated 42 million people receiving food aid from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. The figure represents 12.3 percent of the U.S. population, according to the USDA. In the richest nation on Earth that is not something to brag about. It is, or ought to be, a disgrace.
SNAP is a casualty of the government “shutdown,” though two federal judges have ordered the Trump administration to restore funds to the program. On Monday,

Hints From Heloise

Host a tea party with all the kids
Dear Heloise: After reading the suggestion about gifting a child’s tea set to a grandmother with a new granddaughter, I just had to say that any grandchild would love tea parties! I started tea parties with my granddaughter, but the boys felt very excluded (which they were at first).

Floyd ties career high as WVU wins opener

MORGANTOWN — Apparently there is a story about Jasper Floyd looking good on opening night.
That’s the good news for the West Virginia men’s basketball team, which pulled away late Tuesday for a 70-54 victory over Mount St. Mary’s inside the Hope Coliseum in Ross Hodge’s first win as WVU’s head coach.
Floyd tied his career high with 25 points. He finished with eight points and an assist over the final 6:23, after Mount St. Mary’s had pulled within 52-46.

Dirty cars, dirty politics

When there’s crime, I blame the criminal.
But Dallas politicians blamed a business.
Dale Davenport owned Jim’s Car Wash. But five years ago, after a shooting at the property, the city ordered him to shut it down.
Why did they target his car wash?
When I first investigated this story, Davenport told me he was a “model citizen,” doing everything local politicians asked of him:
“They said build a 6-foot fence. I built an 8-foot fence. Then they said, put up signs. I already had signs up, so I put
