Hints From Heloise

Keeping
guacamole fresh
Dear Heloise: To keep guacamole from turning brown after making it, place the pit into the mixture, and it will stay nice and green. — Carolyn Y., in Abilene, Texas
Carolyn, I’m sorry to say that this is only a myth. The avocado seed does not prevent guacamole from oxidizing to a brown color, except for the small area directly under the seed. Instead, use a cling film and place it on top of the guacamole so that the film rests on the guacamole with no air between the food

Senate leader eyes potential shutdown deal but there’s no guarantee of success

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Senate held a rare Sunday session, the Republican leader said a potential deal was “coming together” on the government shutdown. But there was no guarantee it would end an impasse now stretching to 40 days.
Moderate Democrats huddled over the weekend to find a compromise to reopen the government as the shutdown continued to disrupt flights nationwide, threaten food assistance for millions of Americans and leave federal workers without pay.
Top Republicans were working

Hubbard’s refusal to stay down kept WVU up against Colorado

MORGANTOWN — If you had WVU scoring a safety off a blocked punt and then getting two rushing touchdowns from an outside linebacker on your list of expectations Saturday, then a lottery ticket should be your next purchase.
Those were just two stories on a day filled with them, as West Virginia outlasted Colorado, 29-22, inside Milan Puskar Stadium.
How about freshman quarterback Scotty Fox Jr.? He came back from throwing two interceptions on back-to-back plays in the third quarter that led to the

Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue dies at age of 84

(AP) — Paul Tagliabue led the NFL to greater riches, more diversity and soaring popularity during his 17-year tenure as commissioner of America’s favorite sport. His stewardship also was marked by the league’s dawdling recognition of the impact and severity of concussions.
Tagliabue, who died Sunday of heart failure at age 84, was commissioner from 1989 to 2006. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

Drawing the line with daughter-in-law

Dear Annie: My 54-year-old son recently married his childhood sweetheart with whom he had a son 36 years ago. They never married before but kept in touch because of their son. Unfortunately, their boy was killed in an auto accident four years ago.
I’ve loosely kept in touch with my new daughter-in-law all this time. Last year, she stole a debit card from me and emptied one of my bank accounts. She was caught and has been reimbursing me but still owes about half the amount she stole.
Recently I

Flood of 1985

MOOREFIELD — “My God, Jen. I gotta get Jen. Help me. Please.”
Call that a clothesline prayer.
Robin Moore sent it bubbling through the chop just after midnight on Nov. 5, 1985, when she was pulled under.
The rain was pounding like Hell’s drumline. The river was a rabid dog.
Mobile homes aren’t made for this.
It was her dad’s place. Rob Roy Watkins served for years as assistant postmaster of Morgantown.
When it came time for retirement, he knew right where to forward his mail: the mountains
