Dec. 28, 1879: Brigadier General Billy Mitchell was born in France. As chief of the Army Air Service, Mitchell ordered aircraft of the 88th Squadron to perform reconnaissance during the 1921 Miners’ March on Logan.
Dec. 28, 1978: The last trains ran on the Greenbrier Division, a branch line of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.

Japan’s Cabinet OKs record defense budget

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s Cabinet on Friday approved a record defense budget plan exceeding 9 trillion yen ($58 billion) for the coming year, aiming to fortify its strike-back capability and coastal defense with cruise missiles and unmanned arsenals as tensions rise in the region.
The draft budget for fiscal 2026, beginning April, is up 9.4% from 2025 and marks the fourth year of Japan’s ongoing five-year program to double annual arms spending to 2% of gross domestic product.

New Charges in Shooting of West Virginia National Guard Members Would Allow Death Penalty

(AP) —A man accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House has been charged in a complaint with federal firearms charges in connection with the ambush on Nov. 26 that fatally wounded one of the West Virginia National Guard members and seriously injured the second.

Whooping cough cases continue to rise statewide

MORGANTOWN — Two West Virginia University physicians are encouraging people to recognize the early symptoms of pertussis, or whooping cough, so they can take precautions and seek treatment, when necessary, to avoid further spread of the infection.
Since early November, the number of identified cases of whooping cough in the Mountain State has increased to a magnitude not seen since 2010, as reported by the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health.
