State funds keep park open during critical times

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — Despite the federal government shutdown, the Canyon Rim and Sandstone visitors centers within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve are open today. Governor Patrick Morrisey and state Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby last week announced the state would cover the costs of keeping those facilities open as the government is halted in Washington D.C.

Miller: “Don’t pay me, we’re in a shutdown”

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Rep. Carol Miller was home in Huntington as the federal government shutdown moved through its sixth day.

Miller (WV-1), by her choice, isn’t being paid her congressional salary.
“It’s just making the point, ‘Don’t pay me. We’re in a shutdown. I’m at home,'” Miller said Monday on MetroNews Midday.

State board sends power struggle about authority over education policies to Supreme Court, again

Lawyers for the state school board and superintendent have launched a state Supreme Court challenge in a power struggle over who has the final authority over education regulations, saying the Legislature has repeated an attempt at a “Constitutional coup.”
The lawsuit, which has been anticipated for months, was filed straight to West Virginia’s top court of review. The attorneys for the state board contend the precedent is clear and that oral argument is not necessary.

Woman dead after being struck by vehicle in Boone County

MADISON, W.Va. — A 28-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a car in Boone County.
State police troopers said Kaitlyn Gilliam died from the injuries she suffered Saturday morning on Pond Fork Road near Madison.
Troopers said witnesses told them Gilliam ran into the road shortly before the collision.
The driver has not been charged. An investigation continues.

Group rescued in Greenbrier County cave

FRANKFORD, W.Va. — A group of cave explorers had to be rescued Saturday evening in Greenbrier County.
A Facebook post from the Frankford Volunteer Fire Department said nine people were 2,500 feet into the cave near Frankford.
“Three separate rescue teams made entry into the cave system and successfully rescued all individuals,” the post said.
The initial call for assistance came in at about 8 p.m., crews cleared the scene at about 11 p.m.

Appalachian Power looking back on long recovery process one year after Hurricane Helene struck

MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. — It’s been just over a year since Hurricane Helene made landfall, and Appalachian Power is reflecting on the long road to recovery.
Helene ripped up multiple towns in North Carolina and Tennesse and killed at least 250 people. At the peak, 282,000 Appalachian Power customers were without electricity across its zone in West Virginia and parts of Virginia and Tennessee.
