Morgantown secures third consecutive regional title with 11-3 win over Spring Mills

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown became the first team to clinch a spot in next month’s Class AAAA State Tournament by defeating Spring Mills, 11-3 in a North Region co-final. After finishing as the state runner-up last season, MHS is headed to state for the third consecutive season.
“We try to think of this as a program and not a team,” said Morgantown head coach Pat Sherald. “It is built up from the ninth grade on up, quite frankly within the community. We have a great baseball community here.

Run for the Wall makes stop in Nitro Wednesday

NITRO, W.Va. –Three hundred motorcyclists roared into Nitro on Wednesday evening as part of the 38th annual Run for the Wall event.
The event, which began in 1989, aims to promote healing, call for an accounting of all prisoners of war and those missing in action, honor the memory of those killed in action, and support military personnel around the world.
This year, riders began in Ontario, California, on May 13 and will continue until they reach Washington, D.C.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –Marshall University’s Community Cares Week is underway, allowing the campus and local community to give back to the Herd.

Beckley attorney files appeal with state Supreme Court over Appalachian Power base rate increase

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Dispute over an Appalachian Power base rate increase set to begin June 1 has taken a legal turn.
Beckley-based attorney Stephen New filed an appeal on behalf of ApCo customers over a $40 million inflationary rate increase approved by the state Public Service Commission. The PSC gave its assent to the increase provided that Appalachian Power would hold off on filing another base rate proposal until after June 2027.

Kanawha County sees damage and outages after Wednesday storm

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. –Severe weather moved across West Virginia on Wednesday, leaving some areas with damage, flooding, and power outages.
In Kanawha County, more than 1,800 outages have been reported, according to Appalachian Power’s outage map.
Earlier Wednesday afternoon, radar indicated that a tropical air mass helped create a heavy storm that impacted the Sissonville and Pocatalico areas, as well as areas north along Interstate 77.

Heavy storm produces tornado warning in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for sections of northwestern Kanawha County Wednesday afternoon.
The warning was in effect for nearly a half hour before being cancelled at 4:30 p.m.
Radar indicated a tropical air mass helped create a heavy storm that hit the Sissonville, Pocatalico area and north on Interstate 77.
The Weather Service said marble-sized hail was reported.
A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for several counties, including Kanawha,

Human remains found in Greenbrier County

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Greenbrier County authorities confirm the discovery of a set of human remains in a wooded area of the county. The discovery was made in connection with an ongoing missing persons case.
Law enforcement conducted a coordinated search of the wooded area tied to the active investigation on Tuesday. The remains were discovered as part of that search.

State moves to intervene in lawsuit over The Greenbrier over $4.4 million in tax liens

West Virginia’s state tax department has moved to intervene in a lawsuit over control of The Greenbrier Hotel because of liens it has issued over about $4.4 million in unremitted taxes.
Lawyers for the state tax department say intervention is necessary to protect West Virginia’s claim on millions of dollars owed by Greenbrier Hotel Corp.
“The Defendants owe millions in unpaid Consumers Sales and Services Taxes to the Tax Division,” wrote the lawyers for the state.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State Supreme Court Chief Justice Haley Bunn appeared before U.S. District Judge John Copenhaver many times during her career as an assistant U.S. Attorney.
