2026 WVSSAC Softball State Tournament Seeds/Schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Thirty-two teams have qualified for the WVSSAC Class AAAA Softball State Tournament. The  double-elimination event will begin on Wednesday, May 27 and will conclude Thursday, June 4 at the South Charleston’s Little Creek Park. Radio broadcasts of all state tournament games will air on the MetroNews Radio Network and will be streamed at wvmetronews.com.
Class AAAA State Tournament seeds:

Cabell Midland (24-3)
University (24-5)
George Washington (25-5)
Morgantown (22-10)

Arrest made in Raleigh County double murder

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Raleigh County sheriff’s deputies say a man is in custody in connection with a June 2024 double murder.  
Joshua Reeves, 28, is charged with two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of Dennis Gwinn and James Griffith.
They were shot before crashing into Beaver Baptist Church on June 22, 2024.
Deputies said there’s an arrest warrant out for a second man, Ranny Smith, who is currently jail in another state.  
The charges include two counts of first-degree murder, one count

Justices say they have secured financing to pay off loans at heart of Greenbrier dispute

Senator Jim Justice and his family business organization announced they have secured financing to fully satisfy the loans at the center of a conflict between the owners of The Greenbrier and an affiliate of Omni Hotels & Resorts.
The financing transaction is expected to close in or around late June 2026, according to the Justices.
The announcement does not name a specific lender or provide a financial figure.
The Justices, in the announcement, say the financing will satisfy all obligations

Parkersburg man charged with child abuse in shaken baby case

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – A Parkersburg man faces a child abuse charge after admitting to shaking his 4-month-old child which resuled in the infant suffering serious injuries.
According to Parkersburg police, they were notified by state Child Protective Services on May 12 about an incident involving an unresponsive infant being brought to Camden Clark Medical Center.

Grafton High teacher charged for alleged inappropriate contact with student

GRAFTON, W.Va. – A Grafton High School teacher faces charges for allegedly touching a child inappropriately.
Grafton Police say they were contacted by the high school on May 20 about an incident of a teacher inappropriately touching a child. Zachary Shumaker, 26, of Fairmont is charged with two felonies related to the incident in which he allegedly both touched and made sexual comments to a juvenile.

West Virginia Turnpike officials gearing up for busy Memorial Day weekend travels

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –West Virginia Turnpike officials say they expect to see 349,000 transactions on the Turnpike this Memorial Day weekend.
According to a release from Turnpike officials, they predict that Friday will be the most heavily traveled day, with transactions expected to be around 146,000.
They said Monday, Memorial Day, is expected to have around 108,000 transactions.
Only 101,000 transactions are expected Saturday and about 84,000 is expected Sunday.

Stars shine for West Virginia in 4-2 win against Kansas State

West Virginia’s star power was evident throughout the All-Big 12 Conference selections announced earlier this week.
The Mountaineers led the league with 10 players honored, including a Big 12-best four on the first team.

Hampshire extends their season with 7-5 win at RCB; decisive regional game Friday

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. — After falling at Robert C. Byrd, 4-3 on Tuesday in the Class AAA Region II Tournament, Hampshire was left with no margin for error to qualify for the state tournament. The Trojans have forced the double-elimination regional to the limit by avenging their earlier loss to the Flying Eagles, 7-5 on a soggy evening at Frank Loria Memorial Field in the first game of the championship round.

$12 Million grant announced for Upshur County multi-sport complex project

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. –Upshur County is receiving a grant to support its multi-sport complex.
Governor Patrick Morrisey, local officials, and community members gathered Thursday in Buckhannon to announce a $12 million Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization (AMLER) grant for the John C. Allen Regional Hub.
The grant will be combined with previously secured local, state, and private resources to support the project.

Parkersburg Man Charged with Child abuse for allegedly shaking infant
