DNR encourages boating safety for busy Memorial Day weekend, into summer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Boating safety is on the forefront of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources’ minds as summer approaches.
DNR Police Sgt. Dakota Chattin told MetroNews that almost every officer from the agency is out on the water over Memorial Day weekend.
“We have multiple boats laid out across the state, just about every major body of water is going have a DNR patrol on it,” Chattin said.
Chattin encouraged those going out on the water, especially those on the river, to stay

West Virginia National Guard Foundation increasing efforts as needs grow

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia National Guard Foundation is increasing its efforts to support service members and their families, especially during deployments.
Frank Vitale
Foundation President Frank Vitale said the foundation normally steps in to assist families in need when their loved one is deployed.
“We can be found often giving grants to families who have needs that arise, especially during deployment,” Vitale said Friday on MetroNews “Midday”.

No progress in Teamsters Local 175 and The Beverage Market negotiations, strike continues

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Around 50 members of the Teamsters Local 175 union who work for The Beverage Market in the Capital City report no progress in contract negotiations that resumed Friday.
The workers went on strike May 12, citing unfair labor practices from the company. The previous contract between the union and The Beverage Market expired at the beginning of May.

Mountaineers fall to Kansas 9-0, miss out on Big 12 crown

West Virginia’s quest for a Big 12 Conference Tournament Championship continues.
The Mountaineers hit into three inning-ending double plays over the first five innings and squandered another prime scoring opportunity in the sixth while unable to solve Kansas in a 9-0 loss at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz. 
A No. 2 seed ranked No. 9 nationally, WVU (39-14) was 11-1 in May prior to Saturday’s setback, including a three-game sweep at Kansas in the second-to-last weekend of the regular season.

Troopers say Richwood mother killed daughter then reported her missing

RICHWOOD, W.Va. — State police arrested a Richwood woman Saturday and charged her with killing her daughter.
Troopers said Staci Wind, 50, reported her daughter , Ayla Wind, 26, missing last Monday, May 18. On Friday, troopers responded to Summit Lake in Greenbrier County where human remains were found in a shallow grave.
Staci Wind was arrested at a residence on Riverside Drive in Richwood Saturday and charged her with first degree murder. She’s in the Central Regional Jail without bail.

Marshall County man wrecks vehicle in Ohio while fleeing police investigating domestic violence case

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — Marshall County authorities said a man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and then ran from police.
James Wood was taken into custody in Ohio Friday afternoon after the alleged assault at the AAA Trailer Park in Moundsville.
Marshall County deputies said Wood was fleeing police and wrecked his vehicle on Ohio Route 7. He was then arrested.
Deputies said Wood fled from them once before during an investigation into a similar domestic assault case.
