We celebrate the birth anniversaries of two West Virginia sports legends this week.  
  Golf’s Sam Snead was born on May 27th 1912 and The Logo, Jerry West was born May 28th, 1938.  Both are gone now, but certainly not forgotten.

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. — One win away from their first state tournament appearance in 36 years, East Fairmont wasted no time in lighting up the scoreboard in the Class AAA Region I co-final. Southern West Virginia study investigates issues for youth aging out of foster care

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A study in southern West Virginia showed there’s work to be done for educating young adults transitioning out of foster care in the Mountain State.
A five-month study from the FPC Hope Center worked with 14 organizations in Kanawha and Clay counties to explore the issues that foster care youth face.

Governor cites financial gap for family aid program, hints at cuts and puzzles lawmakers

West Virginia leaders are still assessing recent comments by Gov. Patrick Morrisey, who indicated the state has a $40 million structural gap in funding for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
The safety net program, often called TANF, provides monthly cash payments and support services to low-income families with children to help them achieve economic stability and self-sufficiency. It is a federally funded, state-run program often referred to as “welfare.”

Bridgeport secures state tourney spot with 7-2 win over Elkins

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. — A three-year absence from play at the state baseball tournament has ended for the Bridgeport Indians. BHS defeated Elkins, 7-2 in the championship game of the Class AAA Region II tournament, earning one of the two regional spots.
Hampshire and Robert C. Byrd will complete their suspended game Tuesday to become the second Region II team at the state tournament.

Statler focused on needs of school systems in special education funding

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The chairman of the House of Delegates Education Committee continues to emphasize the need for more state funding to address rising costs to provide special education.

Huntington police investigating murder, double shooting

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Police are investigating a murder and double shooting in Huntington.
Huntington police said the shooting death occurred Sunday night. A man’s body found in the 2600 block of Fifth Avenue had been fatally shot.
The shooting happened at around 8 p.m. Sunday.
No arrests have been made.
Huntington police also report two men were shot at about 1:20 a.m. Monday in the Marcum Terrace housing complex.
The investigation into those shootings is also underway.

Chance for flooding rains to continue through midweek

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service said there’s a chance for more heavy rain in West Virginia through midweek.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Gabe Wawrin said the rain pattern could dump showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
