Turnpike detour used after 12-vehicle crash in Fayette County

MOSSY, W.Va. — The northbound lanes of the West Virginia Turnpike reopened early Wednesday morning after a 12-vehicle pile-up in Fayette County that stalled traffic for about five hours.
The wreck was first reported at a few minutes after 10 p.m. Tuesday two miles north of the Mossy exit. It involved passenger vehicles and tractor trailers.
The highway reopened at around 3:40 a.m.

Capito praises confirmation of State Senator Stuart as General Counsel for HHS

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –West Virginia Senator Mike Stuart was confirmed to serve as the General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Tuesday.

Bat issues at Chapmanville Regional High School draw law enforcement attention

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. — The issue with bats which has closed down Chapmanville Regional High School this week may have become much more complicated.
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Police confirmed they were called to the school to investigate a complaint about the removal of the bats from the building. The agency was limited in what information they would reveal, but Tuesday afternoon issued the following statement.

Support to raise minimum sentence for murder one grows

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County Delegate Dana Ferrell said he planned to introduce a bill during the upcoming regular legislative session to increase the minimum sentence for anyone convicted of first degree murder. Currently if a convicted killer is granted mercy in sentencing, they become eligible for parole in 15 years. Ferrell said that’s not nearly enough.

West Virginia is already up on deadline to apply for millions of dollars in rural health support

A representative of the Governor’s Office described to lawmakers the urgency of meeting a Nov. 5  deadline for a five-year funding application valued at about $100 million a year to support rural healthcare.
“We are on something of a compressed timeframe,” Curtis Capehart, director of policy for Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s administration, told the Oversight Commission on Health and Human Resources Accountability during legislative interim meetings at the state Capitol.

A dozen apply to fill Supreme Court vacancy that resulted from Armstead’s death

A dozen people have applied for consideration to the state Supreme Court position that opened after the death of Justice Tim Armstead.
In West Virginia, when a judicial position on the Supreme Court of Appeals becomes vacant before the end of a term, the governor appoints a replacement from a list of qualified candidates submitted by the Judicial Vacancy Advisory Commission.
