Fairmont officials prepare for FEMA and disaster relief efforts

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — With a federal disaster declaration now in place, officials in the City of Fairmont are providing space for Federal Emergency Management Agency staff to assist residents impacted by the flash flooding over Father’s Day weekend.

Statewide organization seeks accountability following state hospital standoff

WESTON, W.Va. — A statewide organization with a lawsuit pending against the state Department of Health Facilities is responding to the recent armed standoff at the William R. Sharpe Jr. Psychiatric Hospital.

Looking to prolong TBT run, Best Virginia set to face Shell Shock in quarterfinal

After five days without a game, Best Virginia returns to the hardwood inside the Charleston Coliseum for a FS1-televised quarterfinal in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) at 6 p.m. Monday against Shell Shock.
In the six years it has competed in TBT, this marks Best Virginia’s second appearance in a quarterfinal, while the team has never advanced beyond this stage.

Investigation underway in Kanawha County following early morning fire

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An investigation into a house fire that broke out on the West Side area of Kanawha County early Sunday morning is underway.
Multiple crews responded to the blaze that was reported in the 300 block of West Main Street just after 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
Those who responded included the Jefferson, Lakewood, and Institute Volunteer Fire Departments, and Hurricane Fire and Rescue.
No word yet on whether anyone was in the home or if any injuries occurred.

WV Wesleyan College President James Moore inks contract extension

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan College President Dr. James Moore will stay in Buckhannon for the long run.

Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees voted last week to extend Moore’s contract through June 2032.
Moore has served as the school’s president since 2022 when he was named to the role with an interim tag and was made the full-time president in 2023. Moore, the music professor, came to Buckhannon in 2006 to teach and serve as the director of jazz ensembles.

Three hospitalized following crash in Cabell County

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — Three are hospitalized after a crash Saturday afternoon along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 in Cabell County.
Cabell County 911 dispatchers say it happened near mile marker 24 between Barboursville and Milton just before 1:30 p.m.
Deputies say the crash involved a single vehicle, and it occurred after the driver was reaching for a water bottle and struck the guardrail.

Morgan County deputy injured in officer-involved shooting

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — A Morgan County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering after being shot Saturday morning.
Sheriff Johnnie Walter tells MetroNews deputies were called around 7 a.m. to a domestic in the Spohrs Crossroads area east of Berkeley Springs.
