Mountaineers rally past TCU in regular season finale, 6-4

GRANVILLE, W.Va. — Five outs away from suffering just their third series loss in Big 12 play, the Mountaineers ignited a three-run rally in the eighth inning to take the rubber game of their series from TCU, 6-4. West Virginia closed the regular season with a 37-13 record and a program-best 21 Big 12 victories.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth and with rain intensifying, West Virginia’s Brodie Kresser and Brock Wills both scored on wild pitches in succession to give the Mountaineers

Body recovered from Elk River in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A body was recovered from the Elk River in Charleston Saturday afternoon.
The body was spotted at about 1 p.m. near the Washington Street Bridge.
Charleston Fire Department crews were on the scene to recover the body.
Charleston police are investigating the death.

NITRO, W.Va. –Employees at West Virginia American Water, both new and experienced, now have the opportunity to receive training in Nitro that includes classroom instruction and hands-on learning.

In Supreme Court case, charter schools say they’ve been allowing religious exemptions to vaccination

West Virginia’s charter schools are officially arguing in favor of religious exemptions to mandatory school vaccination requirements, in contrast to the position taken by the state’s more traditional public school system.
The West Virginia Professional Charter Schools Board entered a friend of the court brief this past week in a state Supreme Court review of conflict between the state’s religious freedoms law and its mandatory school vaccination law.

Loaded for bluegill, Preston County angler hauls in a giant chain pickerel

REEDSVILLE, W.Va. — An April trip to a flood control lake in Preston County was supposed to be for small to medium sized panfish. Reedsville resident Matt Born soon found out he was not equipped for what was about to happen.
Fishing from a kayak, Born had spooled up four-pound test line for this trip and was using small, homemade spinners. He was targeting larger bluegill and caught a few as he moved toward a series of lily pads. One long cast later, things changed.

Guns stolen from Berkeley gun shop

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — A dozen handguns were reportedly stolen from a Hedgesville gun shop.
The Berkeley Armory reports that around 3:20 Friday morning, three young males wearing masks, black clothing, and gloves scouted the building, tried to break in unsuccessfully, then returned, smashing the glass in, jumping through the window, and stealing the handguns.

Grace Jenkins provided the punch and Jenae Berry did the work on the mound in crunch time to lead Arizona past Marshall, 7-5, Friday in the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament at Duke’s Smith Family Stadium iin Durham, N.C.

Lance Davis tosses a 3-hitter as TCU evens series with WVU, 4-0

GRANVILLE, W.Va. — TCU’s Lance Davis brought WVU’s eight-game winning streak and hopes of an outright Big 12 regular season championship to an end with a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory in front of 3,759 fans at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Arrest made in 2022 disappearance of Gretchen Fleming; suspect faces multiple charges

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. –An arrest has been made in connection with the 2022 disappearance of Gretchen Fleming, a Wood County resident.
Gretchen Fleming, 28, of Vienna, was last seen Dec. 4, 2022.
Parkersburg Police chief Matthew Board announced Friday afternoon that Preston D. Pierce, 58, was arrested in the Asheville, North Carolina, area by the United States Marshals Service, the West Virginia CUFFED Task Force and the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force.
