Names released in Kanawha County double fatal crash

LOUDENDALE, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the victims in a double fatal crash that happened Wednesday morning near Kanawha State Forest.
Deputies said Matthew Cornell, 56, and his wife, Tracey Cornell, 55, of Charleston, died when the pickup truck Matthew Cornell was driving went off Kanawha State Forest Drive at about 9:30 a.m., struck a tree and overturned in the bed of a roadside creek.
Both died at the scene, deputies said.

Fayette County police investigate active shooter incident

FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. –An investigation is underway in Fayette County following an active shooter incident on Wolf Creek Road in Fayetteville.

According to Fayette County Sheriff Jess McMullen, Max David Johnson, 32, of Fayetteville was arrested Thursday.
McMullen said that deputies had been dispatched after they received reports of a male subject armed with a handgun inside a local business while employees and customers were present.

Psychologist testifies in defense of Timothy Kennedy during trooper murder trial

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. –A psychologist who evaluated the Mingo County man on trial for the death of a state police trooper to the stand Thursday during the eighth day of trial.
Timothy Kennedy, 32, of Matewan is facing charges of murder, first-degree robbery, disarming a law enforcement officer, and two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the death of West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard in June 2023.
