Accused murderer arraigned in Kanawha County Circuit Court

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Maryland man accused in a Charleston murder pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Friday in Kanawha County Circuit Court.
Joshua Scales (WVRJA)
Joshua Robert Scales, 33, of Hyattsville, Maryland, was indicted recently by Kanawha County grand jury following his February arrest on charges that he shot and killed Ethan Chic-Colbert, 34, of St. Albans on Elizabeth Street on January 26. Chic-Colbert had suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.

Federal health agency says West Virginia should honor religious exemptions to vaccination

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has sent a sternly worded letter to West Virginia health departments to emphasize compliance with religious exemptions to childhood vaccinations.
In doing so, the federal government has waded into a West Virginia issue that has involved the governor, the Legislature, the state Board of Education and the court system over the potential interaction between the state’s required school vaccinations and a separate Equal Protection for Religion Act.

Richwood turns the page on 2016 flood with new school

RICHWOOD, W.Va. — Richwood can now finally turn the page on the June 2016 flood.
Faculty and staff welcomed students to the new Richwood Middle/High School building for the first time Friday.
The new school was constructed around Cherry River Elementary.

Explorer Academy expected to reopen next week after mold discovery relocated students

HUNTINGTON, W.Va – Cabell County Schools announced tentative plans Friday for students at Explorer Academy who were relocated to start the school year due to mold being found in the school building.
Explorer Academy classes are currently housed at the Cabell County Schools’ Central Office, and an update indicates the current plan is for that to continue into the early part of next week.

Preston County man accused of threatening behavior when denied transportation to the White House

KINGWOOD, W.Va. – A Preston County man has been arrested after police said he threatened a victim and family if they did not provide transportation to the White House.
Roy Whaley
Roy Whaley III, 26, has been charged with harassment by cell phone for using a social media app to send a message asking for transportation to the White House and threatening violence if they did not comply.
West Virginia State Police said Whaley sent at least 81 messages to the victim and her husband over several days

Alleged motorcycle club leader on trial for Marion County murder

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Testimony is expected to continue into next week in a murder trial involving a motorcycle gang member.
Ryan Lane
Ryan Lane, 37, allegedly participated in the 2022 murder of Henry Silver. He’s the last of six people charged in the murder to go to trial.
Prosecution witnesses said Lane was the chapter president of the Pagan Motorcycle Club when plans were made to kill Silver who was believed to be romantically involved with a girlfriend of one of the members.

For state employees, PEIA is a benefit – an offset for wages and perks they might earn in the private sector. But with pay raises often washed away by rising premiums, many don’t see themselves as coming out ahead. Frustration runs high.
