The joy, verve and poetry of WVU baseball

In the endearing baseball movie Bull Durham, the character Annie Savoy says when the team gets on a hot streak, “For one extraordinary June and July, the Durham Bulls began playing baseball with joy and verve and poetry.”
And so it is now for the West Virginia University baseball team. The Mountaineers are riding a historic hot streak right into Omaha for their first-ever appearance in the College Baseball World Series, beginning with a game tomorrow against Troy.

Pedestrian struck on Interstate 64 west in Cabell County; road currently closed

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –The westbound lanes on Interstate 64 in Cabell County are closed down after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.
The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. near the 14-mile marker. There is now word on the condition of the pedestrian.
Traffic is currently being detoured at the 29th Street exit (Exit 15).

Marshall University Board of Governors approves property purchase, Metro Tuition expansion

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –The Marshall University Board of Governors approved several items during its meeting Wednesday, including the purchase of property for a new School of Medicine building and an expansion of its Metro Tuition rates.

Man arrested in connection to bank robbery in Belle

BELLE, W.Va. –A man has been charged in connection to a bank robbery in Belle on Thursday.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Donald Brisson, 43, was arrested Monday on a Kanawha County Magistrate Court capias. Deputies allege he robbed Whitesville State Bank in Belle.
Investigators said he allegedly entered the bank and presented a handwritten note demanding money from bank employees. Brisson then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

West Virginia GOP announces Boone County registration shift

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The West Virginia Republican Party says that Boone County has officially flipped Republican in voter registration for the first time in recorded history.
According to the parties’ release Wednesday, Boone County has stood as the democrat stronghold, rooted in the region’s deep ties to organized labor and the coal industry. They also noted that the county was one of just a handful of West Virginia counties who voted for President Obama in 2008.

Former National Park Service worker pleads guilty to theft

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –A former National Park Service worker pleaded guilty Wednesday to theft of government property.
James Masters, 38, of Victor, admitted that he used his position as a worker, from October 2025 to February 2026, to access and remove money for the donation box at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, which is part of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in Fayette County, without permission or authority on several occasions.

Logan County man and woman arrested following shots-fired incident in Wilkinson

LOGAN COUNYT, W.Va. –A Logan County man is in custody following a shots fired incident Tuesday in the community of Wilkinson.

West Virginia State Police, with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Rex Hale, 40, of Pecks Mills, following the incident.
According to a state police release, Hale was arrested after he was located at a residence on Milkhouse Hollow Road and fled into a nearby barn and refused to cooperate.
