New stage altogether for WVU and Troy, but both feel validated

OMAHA, Neb. — West Virginia and Troy are the only teams among eight in this year’s Men’s College World Series making their first appearance on the premier stage in college baseball.
Both have every reason to feel they belong and made that evident ahead of Friday’s 1 p.m. (CST) contest between the Mountaineers and Trojans, which will air on ESPN.

Richwood High community mourns after death of longtime band director

RICHWOOD, W.Va. — There’s sadness among the The Pride of Nicholas County: The Lumberjack Express with this week’s death of longtime Richwood High School Band Director Greg James.

Moore says he’s honored being mentioned as possible U.S. Secretary of Labor

Pierce pleads not guilty in death of Gretchen Fleming

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — The man charged in the 2022 kidnapping and death of Wood County resident Gretchen Fleming pleaded not guilty Thursday during his arraignment in Wood County Circuit Court.
Preston Pierce, 58, appeared before Wood County Circuit Judge Jason Wharton on charges of first-degree murder, felony murder, concealment of a dead body and kidnapping. Pierce pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Pierce was arrested last month in North Carolina after he was indicted by a Wood County grand

Industrial accident claims a life in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — A workplace accident in Upshur County has claimed a life.
The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Michael D. Martin, 73, of Mannington, W.Va. was killed in the mishap at Appalachian Forest Products in Buckhannon. The accident happened Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m.
Deputies were called to the scene for a report of an industrial accident. Martin was dead at the scene when they arrived.
Authorities say circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.

Troopers identify woman struck and killed in lane of traffic on I-64

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — State police have identified the person struck and killed on Interstate 64 in Cabell County Wednesday night.
Troopers said Kristy Manley, 36, of Huntington, was in a westbound lane of traffic near the 29th Street exit in Huntington when she was struck by a vehicle being driven by a Kentucky man at around 9:15 p.m.
The driver stopped and began administering CPR, according to troopers. Manley was pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital.
