Charlie Kirk, right wing activist and commentator, honored Thursday at state Capital

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Several thousand people gathered in the capital city Thursday night to honor and remember right-wing activist and commentator Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, 31, was assassinated last week on the campus of Utah Valley University while hosting one of his “Prove Me Wrong” tables. He co-founded Turning Point USA, a nonprofit that advocates for conservative politics on high school, college, and university campuses, in 2012.

Kanawha County BOE votes to approve name for new elementary school

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. –The new Kanawha County elementary school, which will house students from four consolidated schools, now officially has a name.

Sternwheel Regatta generates $40 million economic impact for Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — 2025 was another successful year for the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta.
City officials announced Thursday that the four-day event generated a return on investment and economic impact of $40.1 million, which is up slightly from 2024.

In addition, the Regatta welcomed an estimated 225,000 attendees, with 78 percent of those coming from out of state.
“That’s what we want to see, especially those hotel numbers,” Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said.

Baker: ACC officials misinterpreted rule in first-half ending of Backyard Brawl

Wren Baker has been given clarification regarding the unusual first-half ending to last Saturday’s Backyard Brawl — one that cost the Mountaineers an opportunity at points.

Mason hopeful Blue Raiders are more confident and consistent after notching first win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Entering last week’s game at Nevada, Middle Tennessee was mired in a five-game losing streak stretching the last two seasons.
The Blue Raiders began 2025 with a 34-14 home loss to FCS foe Austin Peay before falling 42-10 at Wisconsin.
MTSU was an underdog in Reno and trailed 13-0 in the fourth quarter, before scoring two touchdowns to claim a 14-13 victory. The winning touchdown came on quarterback Nicholas Vattiato’s 5-yard run with 21 seconds left.

U.S. Drought Monitor says parts of 10 West Virginia counties in extreme drought

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor posted Thursday shows drought conditions worsening in the Mountain State.
The map shows parts of 10 counties in extreme drought including Hancock, Brooke, Barbour, Braxton, Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas, Randolph, Upshur and Lewis counties.
The rest of the Northern Panhandle and most of the Eastern Panhandle are also getting drier.

Capito supports continuing resolution, but says federal government may be headed for shutdown
