State health department warns of uptick in intestinal illnesses

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Department of Health has reported 47 cases of a parasite-caused intestinal illness in the last month.
The state Bureau for Public Health is investigating the increase in an intestinal illness called Cyclosporiasis. Officials said West Virginia typically only reports nine cases of Cyclospora each year. In contrast, there have been 47 reported cases since June 17.

Greenbrier is working on casino license review, could need more time to complete big financing deal

The owners of The Greenbrier Hotel, Senator Jim Justice and his family, are working on a review by the state Lottery Commission about how the resort’s casino license would be affected by a major financial deal.
Lawyers for the Justices say they have also received payoff amounts from creditors. But as they approach a deadline set by a federal judge next week, the lawyers for the Justices say more time could be necessary to finish the big financial deal.

Sistersville Ferry replacement vessel found

SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. — Plans to reopen the historic Sistersville Ferry have taken a step forward.
Sistersville Mayor Bill Rice announced at this week’s meeting of the Sistersville Ferry Board a vessel has been located to replace the damaged one.  The old tow boat took on water when it was put into the water for the season and damage was deemed too severe to repair.

Popular swim beaches closed in Braxton County

SUTTON, W.Va. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has shutdown two popular swimming areas on Sutton  and Burnsville Lakes until further notice.
The swimming beaches at Bee Run and the Bulltown Day Use Area were shutdown Friday following unacceptable water quality tests by the Braxton County Health Department.
The Corps made the announcement via social media, but offered no further information about the water quality issues.

Possible asbestos prompts halt to cleanup at Peoples Cartage site

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The West Virginia Department of Health has issued a Cease and Desist Order to temporarily pause cleanup efforts at the Peoples Cartage warehouse on Camden Ave in Parkersburg.
The department announced Friday afternoon, that as a precaution to allow for further evaluation of possible asbestos containing materials following the fire that occurred on July 5.

A little later than usual, school clothing vouchers get a go-ahead from Morrisey administration

Clothing vouchers for needy families, delayed by the state, are back on.
The Department of Human Services announced that applications for school clothing allowance vouchers will be accepted starting July 20.
That’s about three weeks after when the clothing vouchers usually would have gone active. Eligible families can usually shop with the vouchers starting July 1.
This year, though, there was a delay.

Several weeks have passed since Christian Brand discovered he was among the 2026 Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame Class.

Detroit man arrested for Huntington fatal shooting

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A Michigan man has been arrested for a Cabell County murder.
Kendall Crutcher
Huntington police announced Kendall Deion Crutcher, 44, of Detroit, Michigan was arrested Friday morning. Crutcher was charged with first-degree murder for the July 7 shooting death of Jackie Harper, 33, of South Charleston.
Harper was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of 9th Avenue and 24th Street in Huntington, according to police.

Annual DNR banding of Canada geese nears completion

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A flightless period for Canada geese in West Virginia represents an opportunity for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
