Clarksburg-based union agrees to pay close to $270,000 to settle false claim of federal COVID fund

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A labor union based in Clarksburg has agreed to just under $270,000 to settle allegations that they violated the False Claims Act, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 596 (IBEW Local 596) was one of four labor organizations to settle allegations of falsely obtaining Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans.

Kanawha County man sentenced after obstructing hundreds of pieces of mail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man has been sentenced after he admitted to obstructing mail.
Brice Allen Pomeroy, 26, of Hernshaw, was sentenced to two years of federal probation.
Pomeroy was formerly employed by a United States Postal Service vendor as a mail handler in Charleston. While he was employed, Pomeroy knowingly disposed of over 200 pieces of mail outside of a gas station in Charleston,

The Kanawha County judicial annex project second round bids bring down cost by $5.5 million

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango says that the expansion and redesign of the Judicial Annex is now under the original proposed price after previously being 60% over the $10 million dollar budget.

Last October, the price for the project, which aims to expand for the addition of new magistrates and judges, came in at $16.2 million dollars however, Salango says after the bids came in on Wednesday, they have got that price down by $5.5 million dollars.

State’s largest pickleball tournament to get underway this weekend, bringing in pro players from across the United States

NITRO, W.Va. — As the pickleball sport itself continues to grow, so too does an annual pickleball tournament in Kanawha County.
The third annual Metro 911 Serving for Safety Pickleball Tournament will get underway Friday and last through Sunday at the Nitro Athletic Complex.
Event organizer Johnny Rutherford joined professional pickleball players Susannah Barr and Dominic Catalano on 580 Live Thursday to talk about the tournament. They both came from Boise, Idaho to participate.

Some in eastern panhandle have gone from drought to rain records

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — This time last year, farmers in the Eastern Panhandle were gearing up for a significant drought that didn’t see relief until late summer.

Big Beautiful Bill could result in WV Invest needing more money to help community-technical college students

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Big Beautiful Bill may impact the students that make up most of the enrollment in the state’s community and technical colleges.
