The Roane County Board of Education made the right call Thursday night, voting 4-1 to close Geary Elementary/Middle School and Walton Elementary/Middle School. Students will now be consolidated into Spencer Elementary/Middle, while pre-K classes will move to a new early education center at Roane County High School.

Yeager Airport one of 40 airports ordered to reduce air traffic by 10 percent during shutdown

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia International Yeager Airport in Charleston is among the 40 airports nationwide that will see a 10 percent reduction in scheduled flights during the government shutdown.
The FAA will begin imposing the reduction for the 40 airports beginning Friday.
“All of our direct destinations are on that list,” said CRW director and CEO Dominique Ranieri on MetroNews Midday.

Crash closes westbound lanes on I-64 in South Charleston

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. –A crash is causing delays on Interstate 64 westbound Thursday evening.
The wreck was reported around 5:30 p.m. at the Montrose Drive exit. Traffic is currently being directed off the exit and emergency personnel advises drivers to avoid the area if they can. Police say a tractor trailer was involved and is leaking sulfuric acid.
There is now word on when the interstate will be back open.

Sword re-elected as WV AFL-CIO president

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia AFL-CIO has re-elected President Josh Sword.

Sword was unanimously re-elected to a four-year team this week during the AFL-CIO’s 31st Constitutional Convention in Charleston.
Sword has served as president since 2017. He was re-elected to second term in 2022. Before being elected president, Sword served as secretary-treasurer from 2013-2017.

Comfort level continues to increase for Fox as he gains valuable experience

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Five passes into his college career, Scotty Fox Jr. had completed as many to teammates as he had opponents.
Fox was intercepted twice after coming on during the second half of the Backyard Brawl in his first action against FBS competition.
Since then, while appearing five games, throwing passes in four and starting the last three, Fox has not been picked off in 83 attempts.

WVSSAC State Volleyball Tournament schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission has released seeds and schedules for the WVSSAC State Volleyball Tournament. Competition begins Tuesday, November 11 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Championship matches will be played Thursday, November 13. This is the second staging of a four-class state tournament.

Dukes hope to continue winning ways in Huntington

If the Sun Belt Conference has a realistic chance of having a College Football Playoff-qualifying team, it most will likely would have to be James Madison.
The Dukes are 7-1 and 5-0 in SBC play, with their lone blemish a two-touchdown loss to Louisville in Week 2.
JMU’s wins this season have come against Weber State and Liberty in non-conference play and over Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana, Old Dominion and Texas State in league play.

Former Putnam County bus driver sentenced for driving recklessly in 2024 crash

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. — A former school bus driver in Putnam County was sentenced Thursday in connection with a crash with 28 students on board.
Amy Allen was sentenced to three years of probation on a six-month suspended sentence. In September, Allen pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.
With her plea deal, prosecutors dismissed 28 counts of child neglect creating risk of injury and 23 counts of driving under the influence
