Charleston commemorates Juneteenth with downtown parade and celebration

CHARLESTON, W.Va – Charleston is celebrating Juneteenth with its annual parade, followed by a celebration in Slack Plaza featuring live entertainment, food, educational exhibits, and more.
The parade stepped off from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center at 11:30 on Friday with a long line of organizations participating and several community members recognized as “Mr. and Miss Juneteenth.” Smiles dotted the procession as organizers watched a community come together.

WVU enters $7 million research agreement with Johns Hopkins University

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University and Johns Hopkins University have established a joint research partnership. Researchers from both institutions will work together on difficult challenges in health, science and society.

Marshall roundup: Men’s basketball adds Kuridza for second Tulane transfer of offseason

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Summer workouts are underway for college basketball teams around the country, but there is hardly an end to the recruiting season.
The Marshall men’s team recently bolstered its front court with the addition of 6-foot-9 Bosnian forward Visilije Kuridza, who comes to Huntington after spending last season at Tulane.
Considered somewhat of a project, Kuridza appeared in only two games last season for the Green Wave and did not score.

Phoebe Campbell to guide Marshall swimming and diving

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University has found a new leader for its women’s swimming and diving program.
Phoebe Campbell, who was part of Akron’s program as an assistant coach, is coming to Huntington to replace Ian Walsh, who recently left Marshall to become head coach of both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving program at Pittsburgh.
Campbell will officially be introduced at news conference on June 3 at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium Dutch Miller Deck.

Thousands will turn out for the annual Tour de Coal paddle event

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — What started as an idea in the minds of three or four friends will once again this weekend feature close to 2,000 people paddling kayaks, canoes, and other craft down 13 miles of West Virginia’s Coal River. The annual Tour de Coal float trip will start early Saturday morning from Meadowwood Park in Tornado and go downstream to St. Albans.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey has signed a proclamation recognizing June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth Day in West Virginia, recognizing the historic end of slavery in the United States and encouraging West Virginians to reflect on the enduring importance of freedom.

KRT eyeing solutions to million-dollar budget deficits

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state’s largest public transportation system is dealing with million-dollar budget deficits as it battles for long-term sustainability.
The Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT) held its monthly meeting Thursday in Charleston. Executive director Sean Hill said the board approved a budget last month that was $1.9 million in the “red” — dipping into the authority’s reserve account of $11.3 million.

WVU baseball team returns home from Omaha, Coach Sabins looks ahead to next season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University baseball team has returned home with their heads held high and is ready to look forward to next season.

The Mountaineers returned to Morgantown on Thursday afternoon after they were eliminated from the NCAA College World Series after losing to North Carolina 12-7 on Wednesday.
