Previous verdict vacated for Kanawha County man convicted of murdering his family as a teen

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A new trial will be coming for a Kanawha County man previously convicted of killing four family members in 2020.

Gavin Blaine Smith, 21, was convicted in December 2022 of three counts of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder, and one count of using a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to three life sentences with mercy with an additional 50 years. Those sentences were to run consecutively.

New Division of Corrections Commissioner says improvements in state’s jails and prisons must continue

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — One state leader will now be heading up West Virginia’s troubled jails and corrections system, and says he plans to keep making the necessary improvements toward fixing it.

Jackson County sheriff says attack on pregnant woman was brutal

RIPLEY, W.Va. — Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger said a man’s call to 911 to self-report killing his girlfriend was as intense a call as he’s ever heard.

Collision claims life in Kanawha County

CROSS LANES, W.Va. — A man was struck and killed in the middle of a Kanawha County highway early Monday morning.
Kanawha County deputies said the man was on a motorized scooter that had stopped in the middle of Goff Mountain Road in Cross Lanes at a little after 5 a.m. when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The collision happened in the 100 block of Goff Mountain Road near Cadle Drive.
An investigation is underway.
