Commissioners say coal layoffs were unexpected

LOGAN, W.Va. — The news that Greenbrier Minerals planned to idle all of it’s operations in the Logan County was tough news to hear for those in the community.

Flood recovery still happening a year later

WELCH, W.Va. — The McDowell County Commission continued to lead the effort to help the county recover from the 2025 February flood. Sunday marked the first anniversary of the high water event which left dozens of homes and businesses along with roads and bridges in ruin. The recovery has been slow.

BRIM officials hope changes can help state insurance agency’s financial position

CHARLESTON, W.Va – Efforts to reform West Virginia’s liability insurance agency are ongoing, but officials do not expect to see results right away. Last October, state Board of Risk and Insurance Management Executive Director Jeremy Wolfe told lawmakers that the agency was at “ground zero” with its reserves sapped by lawsuits involving abuse at the Miracle Meadows School in Harrison County. Delbarton man charged in Mingo County shooting

DELBARTON, W.Va. — A Mingo County man is free on bond following a shooting that took place Sunday in Delbarton.
State police charged Keith McCoy, 68, of Delbarton, with malicious wounding and being a prohibited person with a firearm after he allegedly shot Keith Kinser, 33, also of Delbarton.
Troopers said the shooting occurred Sunday at a residence on Day Star Road.
Kinser is hospitalized in stable condition, troopers said.
McCoy was arraigned in Mingo County Magistrate Court and released on

Work set to begin on Montrose Drive bridges in South Charleston

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Work begins Monday night on a significant West Virginia Division of Highways project to replace three bridges at the I-64 Montrose Drive exit.
The Montrose Drive Bridge over I-64, as well as the First Avenue and Second Avenue bridges in South Charleston, will be replaced. South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens knows it may be an inconvenience but said it’s a necessary project.

Judges question original basis for pulling over people in West Virginia immigration arrests

Federal judges in West Virginia have questioned whether law enforcement had probable cause for the initial stops in immigration cases that led to jail and the courtroom.

No. 17 TCU shoots 68 percent in second half to claim key Big 12 win against 19th-ranked WVU, 59-50

No. 17 TCU faced a six-point halftime deficit Sunday night against 19th-ranked West Virginia.
The Horned Frogs could hardly have responded to it any better.
TCU outscored the Mountaineers 20-2 over the first 5:12 of the second half and maintained enough separation from that point forward to lead by multiple possessions in a 59-50 victory.

State remains in psychiatric hospital business where deferred maintenance costs are adding up

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state got out of long-term care hospital business last year when it sold four facilities and licenses to a private company but the state is facing major maintenance issues with the three psychiatric hospitals that it continues to operate.
