Lost Creek man sentenced to life with mercy after killing mother

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A Harrison County man was sentenced Tuesday to a life prison sentence with a chance for parole in the death of his mother.

George Alexander Hoffman, 24, of Lost Creek, previously pleaded guilty to first degree murder with mercy in the stabbing death of Selestine Hoffman Kunkel, 53, also of Lost Creek.
The two lived together.
Hoffman will have a chance for parole in 15 years.
He was sentenced Tuesday by Harrison County Circuit Judge Christopher McCarthy.

Republic Services on a 30-day clock after social media post, PSC letter

CHEAT LAKE, W.Va. — A social media post and letter to the Public Service Commission following a gap in service now has the attention of a major waste hauler.

Delegate David McCormick, R-Monongalia, said hundreds of Republic Service customers in the Cheat Lake area went for about 16 days with no trash pickup. Communication from the company about alternate pickup dates was in some cases nonexistent and unclear in others.

Greenbrier gets last-minute approval on casino license, but auditors raise red flags

The Greenbrier has received last-minute license renewal for its casino, although it’s going to be on a heightened level of quarterly reports about finances.
The historic resort had to sweat it out after submitting mandatory financial information for an annual audit on Monday. The audit information was originally due about March 20, an internal deadline used to ensure enough time before the June 30 license expiration.

Putnam County man identified as victim in homicide investigation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Putnam County man has been identified as the victim in a homicide from two weeks ago.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday afternoon that the victim was Joseph Lovett, 28, of Hurricane. Human remains were discovered near a burning vehicle in the 300 block of Cabin Creek Road on June 14. Those remains were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to be identified.

KRT offering free shuttle service for Charleston Sternwheel Regatta, America 250 celebrations

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state’s largest public transportation system will be lending a helping hand during Independence Day festivities in the Capital City.
The Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT) will offer free shuttle rides in downtown Charleston from July 2-5. Rides will run every 30 minutes throughout each day from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Intense heat for the rest of the week in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Most of West Virginia is under some kind of a heat advisory pretty much through the end of the week. A dome of heat has settled over West Virginia and is leaving the state in a hot, sticky situation with intense humidity to accompany the heat.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Megan Kiebler said it’s going to be miserable.
“We’re looking at a multiple day stretch of very high temperatures and the combined effect of humidity making it feel much warmer,” she said.

Mercer County shooting leaves one dead and three in jail

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — One man is dead and three are in jail after a shooting in a Mercer County school yard.
State Police say Dawlton Blankenship, 24, of Bluefield suffered a gunshot wound to the head in the parking lot of Brushfork Elementary School on Friday June 26th. He was taken to WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital’s Bluefield Emergency Department. He was soon transferred on to Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Virginia where he died of his wound several hours later.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — In Mark Sampson’s first year as Fairmont Senior’s head coach last fall, the Polar Bears posted an 8-2 regular season record, which included quality victories over Wheeling Park and North Marion.
