I was recently reading a commentary recapping the annual 60-day legislative session. The author was not impressed and did not hold back. 
He described the session as concluding in “bitterness and disappointment, with a sigh, a whimper – in failure.”

Morrisey giving state workers early start on 3-day holiday weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Monday night state workers will have a 3.5 day holiday weekend.

Greenbrier has submitted audit information and awaits deadline approval of casino license renewal

The Greenbrier has submitted financial information for a mandatory annual audit that has delayed the renewal of its casino license.
What has to happen now is an expedited meeting of the state Lottery Commission to approve the license renewal before the month ends Tuesday.

Berkeley County prosecutor aims to fill 27th Judicial Circuit vacancy

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Berkeley County prosecutor has officially tossed his hat into the ring for the 27th Judicial Circuit vacancy.
The 27th circuit covers Berkeley and Morgan counties. The opening came about when Judge Steven Redding retired after eight years on the bench in late May.
An application deadline for Redding’s replacement passed last Wednesday. Candidates to fill the vacancy will be interviewed in Morgantown on July 22. Three names for those interviews will be forwarded on to Gov.

Hennessey reunited with family after fatal I-64 crash

KANWAHA COUNTY, W.Va. –The dog rescued last week after a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 64 that killed the driver has been reunited with her family.

Hennessey was reunited with her family Monday, one week after the June 23 crash.
She was riding in the cab of the tractor-trailer with her owner, Jeffrey Simons, 62, of Wellsburg, Iowa, when he lost control of the rig while traveling west on Interstate 64 on the South Charleston-Dunbar Bridge.

Fairmont man arrested after attack on police

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — A Fairmont man faces multiple charges after police said he threw a window air conditioning unit at them.

Fairmont police were attempting to arrest Robert Smith, 36, when he fled into his home and into the attic.
Police said Smith threw a window air conditioning unit through the attic access almost hitting four of the officers.
Smith has been charged with four counts of attempted malicious assault and is being held in the North Central Regional Jail on a

Clarksburg man sentenced to 15 years for local drug operation

CLARKSBURG, W. Va. – A Clarksburg man has been ordered to served 15 years in federal prison for leading a drug operation in that city.
A release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Thomas Charles Goodwine, 32, worked with others to sell fentanyl, p-Fluorofentanyl, and methamphetamine from a home in Clarksburg.
During the investigation, police recovered fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana, a firearm, multiple cell phones, and drug paraphernalia in the residence.

Charleston police make arrest in stabbing, have person of interest in shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police have two active investigations underway into violent incidents Sunday evening.

Charleston Deputy Police Chief Tony Hazelett told MetroNews that officers responded to a “domestic-related” stabbing at 7:45 p.m. in the 1600 block of Pansy Drive. He said officers also responded reports of a shooting in the 2000 block of Hutchinson Street at around 11:25 p.m.

Governor says he wants to work with state education officials about funding and regulatory reforms

Gov. Patrick Morrisey agreed his administration wants to work with state schools officials about education funding and regulatory relief.
