Governor Morrisey visits flood damage in Fairmont

 
FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Folks who live in the neighborhoods close to Fairmont’s Locust Avenue, some of whom have been there six decades, say they’ve never seen flooding like they saw on Sunday afternoon. A deluge of rain poured down on the Friendly City and sent small streams and creeks way out of their banks. Much like the situation in Wheeling just hour earlier, the streams couldn’t handle the water level and the storm drains couldn’t drain it off fast enough.

Appalachian Power to use mobile unit to replace flooded substation near Wheeling

WHEELING , W.Va. — Appalachian Power Company hopes to have a mobile substation installed soon near Wheeling after high water from Little Wheeling Creek destroyed a substation during Saturday night’s flash flood.
It happened in the Valley Grove area of Wheeling. There are 1,700 customers without service.

Appalachian Power spokesperson Erikka Storch said the raging water carried away most of the substation and washed out an area between the substation and the passing road.

University punter Jimmy Gregg commits to Syracuse

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — University High School rising senior punter Jimmy Gregg has verbally committed to compete at Syracuse University. Gregg made the announcement on social media Monday.

West Virginia joins $7.4 billion-dollar opioid settlement agreement with Purdue Pharma and its owners

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Attorney General JB McCuskey, along with the 54 other attorneys general that represent all eligible states and U.S. territories, have agreed to sign onto a settlement with a big opioid company for their role in the creation and worsening of the opioid crisis that spanned across the country.
McCuskey announced Monday morning that they have agreed to sign onto a $7.4 billion dollar settlement with Purdue Pharma and the owners, the Sackler family.

Class A all-state baseball list

WVSWA ‘Icon’ retires after 70 years

R. Douglas “Doug” Huff, whose name is synonymous with the West Virginia Sports Writers Association, announced his retirement as the organization’s secretary-treasurer, effective at the conclusion of the 2024-25 prep athletic season.

Admonishment for former Berkeley County magistrate

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A formal admonishment has been handed down by the West Virginia Judicial Investigation Commission against former Berkeley County Magistrate David DeHaven, who resigned his post and was replaced by Sandy Hamilton last month.

Wheeling-area flash flood described as “stunning” as search resumes for missing residents

WHEELING, W.Va. — Elm Grove business owner Julie Ann Davis says she’s the floodwaters that hit Saturday night reminded her of a similar flood along Big Wheeling Creek and Little Wheeling Creek more than two decades ago.
