In response to project’s fuzzy designation, grassroots organization asks ‘When does a project move from conceptual to real?’

A grassroots coalition in Tucker County says it’s hard to get a handle on what a controversial project in the area even is.
Is it an enormous data center?
Is it a power-generating microgrid?
Is it neither?
State officials have called it “conceptual.”
High Impact Data Centers, slippery like an eel.
As a representative of the grassroots organization Tucker United asked, “When does a project move from ‘conceptual’ to ‘real?'”

Large crowd turns out for opening night of Charleston Sternwheel Regatta

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Despite the heat, a large crowd turned out Thursday for the opening night of the 2026 Charleston Sternwheel Regatta in Charleston.
Rock singer Melissa Etheridge, known for songs including “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One,” and country music star Wynonna Judd, known for “She Is His Only Need” and “I Saw the Light,” kicked off the entertainment Thursday on the Moses Auto Group Stage on Kanawha Boulevard.

Clarksburg man pleads guilty to threatening Trump, ICE agents

HARRISON COUNTY, W.Va. –A Harrison County man faces prison time after he admitted to making threats against President Donald Trump and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Cody Lee Smith, 20, of Clarksburg plead guilty to making threats to kill Trump and to harm ICE agents, according to a release from U.S. Attorney Matt Harvey.
According to the release, on January 17, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department had reported that Smith posted threats on social media,

Charleston Sternwheel Regatta kicks off its four-day run

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Despite red-hot temperatures in the Capital City, the 2026 Charleston Sternwheel Regatta is off and rolling.
Vendors packed the Kanawha Boulevard Thursday to kick off the four-day celebration, selling food, Kona Ice, and much more.

Tommy Evans, Lexi Green win WVGA Junior Amateur titles

DAVIS, W.Va. — A pair of rising high school seniors claimed WVGA Junior Amateur Championships Thursday at Canaan Valley Resort. Tommy Evans of Washington High School defended his title while Lexi Green of Capital High School won the girls division in a playoff.
Evans began the final round tied with Bridgeport’s Alex Randolph atop the leaderboard. His second birdie of the day came on the Par 3 16th hole, one of the most challenging holes on the course. The 10-foot putt gave him a two-stroke lead

Democrats call for legislative special session on school funding

Democrats in West Virginia’s House of Delegates say a special legislative session should be called to address stresses on school funding.

“In the state of West Virginia, education is in a state of emergency,” House Minority Leader Sean Hornbuckle, D-Cabell, said in a press conference outside Piedmont Elementary School in Charleston.
State education officials have sounded an alarm for the coming school year, saying more school closures seem likely in counties around the state.

Fireworks debris blamed for fatal Barbour County house fire

JUNIOR, W.Va. — The remnants of fireworks are believed to be the cause of a mobile home fire Wednesday night in Barbour County which left four people dead.
Investigators were able to determine the fire started on one end of the wooden front porch of the trailer. Deputy State Fire Marshal Jason Baltic said after investigators dug through the debris of the fire on River Avenue in Junior they discovered a number of discarded fireworks tubes and other materials which had been placed in a trash bag.

Morrisey tours West Virginia for America 250 celebrations

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Governor Patrick Morrisey is traveling across the state to attend West Virginia’s America 250 celebrations.
Morrisey began his tour in Kanawha County, where he rode the 230-foot Ferris wheel on the state Capitol grounds. He then traveled to Jackson County for the opening ceremony of the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair at Cedar Lakes Conference Center.

National organization wraps up a week of relief effort in W.Va.

VAN, W.Va. — A group of 15 volunteers from an organization which specializes in disaster recovery will wrap up a week of work in Boone County this week. The members of Team Rubicon arrived Monday in Van and fanned out to a number of area homes to assess and help residents with their flood cleanup work.
“Right now primarily we’re doing what you would call ‘mucking out’ a house,” said Rubicon’s Incident Commander Paula Repka.

Crews rebuild flood damaged road in Boone County

WHARTON, W.Va. — The heavy rains on June 22nd may have struck an area of Boone County called James Branch harder than any other. The small stream within less than an hour turned into a raging torrent. The water quickly left the banks of the stream and tore through the pavement of the only road in and out of this narrow southern West Virginia hollow.
