Winfield’s Carroll named state’s softball POY

CHARLESTON — Winfield softball pitcher Mattie Carroll is a winner — again.
After capping her junior season by leading the Generals to their third consecutive state championship, Carroll was named by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association as the Player of the Year on Friday.
Carroll was a second-team all-state selection last season after leading Winfield to the Class AA state championship, but a dominant performance in the state tournament this season – the Generals’ first as a Class AAA

Harman man charged with sexual assault in Tucker

DAVIS – A Harman man is behind bars after reportedly claiming to be Jesus Christ during an alleged sexual assault in Tucker County.
Emmanuel Huffman has been charged with second-degree sexual assault. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $70,000 cash-only bond.

WVU’s Big 12 hoops opponents announced

MORGANTOWN — The Big 12 Conference has announced the scheduling matrix for the 2025-26 men’s basketball season.
Each school has a home-and-home with three other Big 12 opponents, and faces the other 12 opponents once, with six at home and six on the road for an 18-game conference schedule.

There is a new “chapter” in the saga of alcohol-consumption health consequences.
Actually, the chapter itself is not new, but there’s a new recognition that hasn’t been front-and-center in a widespread way up to now.
Now that recognition is becoming more visible and, with that, more troubling.

All-Star Weekend

SOUTH CHARLESTON — It will be a busy slate of all-star action for several area athletes this weekend.
The North-South All-Star basketball games get underway for both the boys and girls this evening at the South Charleston Community Center.
A skills competition starts at 5 p.m., followed by the girls game at 6 p.m. and the boys contest at 7:30 p.m.
