Officials: One killed in helicopter crash in Pocahontas County

POCAHONTAS COUNTY – Officials are reporting that a pilot was killed in a helicopter crash this morning in Huntersville, near Marlinton in Pocahontas County.
The incident happened at around 7:45 a.m. and is being investigated by both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, officials said.
The pilot of the Sikorsky S-76D helicopter was apparently the only person onboard the craft, according to reports.

Elkins to post chief position after Bennett’s resignation

ELKINS – Elkins Police Chief Travis Bennett has resigned from his position, officials announced.
Elkins City Council voted during its Thursday evening meeting to accept Bennett’s resignation, and to post the Elkins Police Chief position.
The seven present council members voted. Second Ward Council member Lisa Severino, Fourth Ward Council member Andrew Carroll and Fifth Ward Council member Cody Thompson were absent from the meeting.
Bennett was not present for the Thursday night meeting.

Two injured in Crystal Springs crash

CRYSTAL SPRINGS – Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident Saturday near Harrison Avenue, past the J.F. Allen facility, police said.
Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputies L. Elbon and C. Waldron responded to the wreck call, finding a silver Subaru Crosstrek in the opposite lane of traffic, off the roadway teetering on the shoulder, with “a guardrail impaled through the windshield of the vehicle,” according to a release from Sheriff Rob Elbon.

Elkins Police Chief resigns

ELKINS — Elkins Police Chief Travis Bennett has resigned from his position, officials announced.
Elkins City Council voted Thursday evening to accept Bennett’s resignation.
A City of Elkins press statement added that Mayor Jerry Marco has confirmed Bennett’s leaving and that officials will soon begin a search for Bennett’s replacement.
“Travis Bennett was more than a police chief; he was a mentor to our officers and a tireless advocate for their well-being and professional growth,” Marco said in

Officials defend implementation of Flock cameras

MORGANTOWN – “We take pictures of license plates. We use those for crimes.”
That, Monongalia County Sheriff Todd Forbes said Wednesday, is the extent of the function and use of the Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras in Monongalia County.
In November, the Monongalia County Commission approved Forbes’ request to use up to $180,000 in directly allocated opioid settlement funds over three years to place as many as 20 of the cameras at locations across the county.

Case dismissed in side-by-side incident

ELKINS — The case against a Randolph County man charged with being in possession of a stolen side-by-side was dismissed this week after officials determined there was “no sufficient evidence.”
During a preliminary hearing, Randolph County Magistrate Benjamin Shepler dismissed the case against Joshua Clarence Miller, 31, of Mill Creek, who was originally charged with one count of receiving or transferring stolen goods, a felony.

$20M investment to bring 200 jobs

WILLIAMSTOWN – Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that a Washington County company will expand its reach across the Ohio River and breathe new life into the former Hino Motors facility outside of Williamstown to contribute components to the data center industry.

Gumbo Parade to march through Elkins

ELKINS – The Augusta Heritage Center will host a Gumbo Parade and a fais do-do – a traditional, foot-stomping Cajun dance party – as part of its Cajun, Creole & Classic Country workshop week today in downtown Elkins.

Elkins Little League All-Star teams heading to state tourney

ELKINS – For the first time in more than a decade, Elkins Little League Baseball will have more than one team competing in state tournament action.     
Both the Elkins Little League 9-10 year-old All-Stars and the 11-12 year-old All-Stars moved on to state tourney competition after stellar play in their respective district tournaments.

Flood watch declared for region

CHARLESTON — A flood watch is in effect through Sunday for most of the state, the National Weather Service (NWS) reports.
The NWS declared a flood watch Thursday for most of West Virginia, including Randolph, Barbour, Upshur, Tucker and Pocohontas counties. The watch for Randolph, Barbour, Upshur and Pocohontas counties is in effect through the morning of July 12. In Tucker County, the watch is in effect through Thursday evening.
