Run For It registration ends Aug. 31

DAVIS — The deadline to register a team for the 19th annual Run For It charitable race is Aug. 31.
Run For It is a 2K walk and a 5K race hosted by the Tucker Community Foundation. This event invites organizations and non-profits within the Foundation’s ten-county service area to participate for cash prizes without any obligations. Currently, 65 teams are registered.

Upshur residents urged to report stream debris

ELKINS – Upshur County residents are being asked to report stream debris blockages from the recent severe flooding, and to “take mold remediation seriously.”
In an Upshur County press release Tuesday, residents were reminded to alert authorities to stream debris blockages that may worsen flooding or obstruct natural water flow.

Former city employee appears on terroristic threats charge

ELKINS – A former City of Elkins employee accused of threatening the mayor and President Donald Trump appeared in Randolph County Magistrate Court and was placed on electronic monitoring this week.
Christopher “Ben” Curtis, 44, is charged with threats of terroristic acts. He was being held in the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail on a $100,000 cash bond that has since been posted.

WVWC sees 20% enrollment increase

BUCKHANNON — West Virginia Wesleyan College welcomes more than 400 new students to campus for the 2026-2027 academic year, marking a more than 20% increase in new student enrollment and the College’s largest freshman class in more than five years.

40-year Randolph County EMS employee retires

ELKINS — After dedicating 40 years to helping take care of the public when emergency situations arose, Elkins resident Ritchie Hamrick has retired from the Randolph County Emergency Squad.
Hamrick started his career with the Randolph County EMS in 1986, just days after earning a diploma from Elkins High School.

Elkins man charged with check forgery

ELKINS — A Randolph County man faces a felony forgery charge after allegedly stealing and using over checks from his father at local stores, totaling more than $700.
Thomas Patrick Southard, 40, of Elkins, is charged with one count of forging or uttering other writing, a felony. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 surety/cash bond, set by Randolph County Magistrate Mike Dyer.

PARKERSBURG – A former Parkersburg man this month completed a goal he hopes will show people there’s hope despite facing problems that may seem to be insurmountable, including school debt.
Brian Bollinger, 52, of Oakland, Md., on Aug. 14 completed a tour of the eastern most, western most, northern most and southern-most points of the contiguous United States. He traveled alone in a 2025 Toyota Corolla nearly 11,000 miles.
