State meet off and running

CHARLESTON — The Elkins High School 4×800-meter relay teams captured Class AAA titles on the opening day of the state meet Friday at Laidley Field, while Tucker County’s Lucas Barb claimed the Class A high jump title.
Bobby Valentine, Josh Bodkins, Dylan Fortney and Trevor George turned in a time of 7:56.80 to nearly best runner-up Winfield by nearly 11 seconds.
George also placed second in the 3,200 in a time of 9:16.39, while teammate Treven Schaeffer placed eighth (10:26.68).

Si Woo Kim just misses history at Byron Nelson

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Si Woo Kim just missed out on a 59 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Friday, bogeying the final hole when a par would have given him the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history.
The 30-year-old South Korean put himself in position to break 60 with a curling 17-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-3 17th hole at TPC Craig Ranch. It was his 12th birdie of the day, putting him at 12 under on the par-71 layout.

Sandra (Sandee) Pawelczyk

Sandra (Sandee) Pawelczyk, who lived in Elkins for many years, passed away on May 11, 2026, at her home in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by family.
Sandee was born on Oct. 3, 1945, daughter to Andrew and Lottie Wolak.
She grew up in Cicero, Illinois, where she met the love of her life, Harry Pawelczyk. They began dating when Sandee was 16 and Harry was 14 and married eight years later on March 8, 1969, at St. Mary’s of Czestochowa church in Cicero.
Harry’s work with the US Forest Service gave

Jessie A. Colehower Somers

Jessie A. Colehower Somers, 100, a resident of Elkins and in the care of the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026.
She was born Feb. 28, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late C. Harris Colehower and Florence Sweeney Colehower.
On Aug. 3, 1968, in Radnor, Pennsylvania, she was married to Oscar C. Somers Jr., who preceded her death in December of 1972.
Jessie is survived by one daughter, Katherine “Kate” Somers and husband, Todd

Randolph County Commission signs Proclamations

ELKINS – The Randolph County Commission approved a pair of Proclamations at its most recent regular meeting held at the Commission Annex.
Child Provider Appreciation Day and Community Action Month were the Proclamations signed and were approved unanimously by Commissioners David Kesling and Cris Siler.
MountainHeart Community Services’ Zandra Kelly discussed Child Provider Appreciation Day, which was observed nationally on May 8, and gave an informational presentation to the County Commission.
