Surging Houston relying on defense and tight end play

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia coaches and players have a lot to do during the week. They have to correct the past and then quickly prepare for the future. There are only a couple of days to do so. This is similar for journalists. Sunday and Monday are for looking at what happened in the past, and then you quickly have to move on to the game ahead.
You can look at stats, box scores and watch some highlights, but you don’t get the nitty-gritty details that a full-time beat writer would.
So, we

Is this the shutdown we need?

It’s fashionable to call the current federal government shutdown a “crisis,” to focus on the missed paychecks, delayed services and bureaucratic disarray. But what if this standoff —this uncomfortable pause in government business — is exactly what the country needs right now? What if the dysfunction is finally forcing Washington, and all of us, to look in the mirror?
For too long, both parties have governed as if the laws of arithmetic didn’t apply to them. Year after year, Congresses controlled

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have picked former bench coach Derek Shelton, who managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for five-plus years, as their new manager.
The Twins made a formal announcement on Thursday and scheduled an introductory news conference for Shelton on Tuesday.
Shelton had an overall record of 306-440 with the Pirates before he was fired on May 8, just 40 games into this season. The 55-year-old was the bench coach for the Twins in 2018 and 2019 under two different managers,

Changes

The Detroit News reported Wednesday that General Motors has laid off thousands of workers from manufacturing facilities in Ohio and Michigan. Though it is tempting to suggest the reason is purely a matter of GM’s overeagerness to catch up to the electric vehicle push, the reality is a bit more complicated.
At the company’s Ultium Cells battery cell plant in Warren, Ohio, there are expected to be approximately 550 cuts and 850 temporary layoffs, according to a report by CNBC. There will also be

When tough love turns too tough

Dear Annie: My husband, “Keith,” and I have been married for 12 years. We’ve always been a team when it comes to parenting our two kids, ages 9 and 6, but lately I’ve noticed a shift. Keith has become increasingly harsh with them, especially our oldest, “Ben.” He’ll snap over small things — like a jacket left on the floor or a missed chore — and his tone has turned cold and critical.
I’ve brought it up several times, but Keith insists he’s “just trying to teach them responsibility.” I understand

Reagan’s handshake vs. Trump’s chokehold

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — As the Los Angeles Dodgers faced off against Canada’s Toronto Blue Jays for the World Series, the first couple of games featured an advertisement that shot around the world. All because when U.S. President Donald Trump noticed it, he reacted like an on-again/off-again girlfriend had just keyed his car.
“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about
