Capito joins push for release of already-appropriated NIH funding

Senator Shelley Moore Capito has joined several of her Republican colleagues in pushing for disbursement of appropriated funds through the National Institutes of Health.
“We are concerned by the slow disbursement rate of FY25 NIH funds, as it risks undermining critical research and the thousands of American jobs its supports,” Capito, R-W.Va., and 12 colleagues wrote in a letter to White House Budget Chief Russ Vought.

Former daycare worker accepts plea deal in child abuse investigation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former childcare worker accused of abusing children with special needs under her care has accepted a plea deal with prosecutors.
Amber Seiler, 30, of Poca entered into a Kennedy Plea Monday before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Kenneth Ballard for one felony count of battery and assault of a disabled child following allegations of Seiler smacking children with special needs and spitting on a 4-year-old while employed at the Cross Lanes Child Care and Learning Center.

I-77 southbound on-ramp at Parkersburg closed for 2 weeks while curb is replaced

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — The on-ramp at a busy Parkersburg exit on Interstate 77 will be closed for the next two weeks.
Crews began work Monday on a project to replace the concrete curb on the southbound on-ramp at the Staunton Ave. (Route 47) exit.
The work is scheduled to be completed by Monday, Aug. 11.
The closest southbound exits for motorists during the work will be the U.S. Route 50 exit to the north and the Camden Ave. exit to the south.

Jackson County Junior livestock sales top $1 Million

RIPLEY, W.Va. — Students who raised livestock for the Jackson County Junior Livestock Fair were handsomely rewarded back on Friday evening.
The total sales for the 4-H and FFA project animals, for the first time ever, topped $1 Million dollars.

Wheeling teenager arrested on weapons charge

WHEELING, W.Va. — A Wheeling teenager is in jail after being arrested on a weapons charge Saturday night.

A Wheeling Police Department news release said Zackary Croghan, 19, was displaying a gun his waistband.
“Police approached the individual, who attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended,” the police release said. “A firearm was located on the individual with an extended magazine.”

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — Morgan County Sheriff Johnnie Walter said Deputy Bradley Mechem continues to recover after being shot while answering a call about a break-in Saturday morning.

Nine hurt in three-vehicle crash involving an ambulance

WESTON, W.Va. — State police are investigating a three vehicle crash Sunday on I-79 in Lewis County involving an ambulance that injured nine people.
An ambulance operated by Harrison County EMS ambulance collided with a personal van while merging onto the roadway. The impact caused the personal vehicle to hit another car.
Troopers closed the roadway for an extended period during the investigation and medical response.
Police said the patients were transported to Mon Health Stonewall Jackson
