Calhoun County Commission to seek removal of commissioner accused of sexual assault

GRANTSVILLE, W.Va. –The Calhoun County Commission met for the first time on Wednesday to address the recent arrest of a commission member and to formally begin the process of removing them from office.
Jacob McCumbers, 39, a first-grade science teacher at Arnoldsburg Elementary, was recently charged with 50 counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian, or person of trust. McCumbers was appointed to the commission last year.

Attorneys in Raleigh County vaccine exemptions case ask for class action status

Lawyers for families suing over religious exemptions to school vaccination requirements are now asking for class action status.
This comes as Judge Michael Froble of Raleigh County has already granted a preliminary injunction specifically applying to two local families and while a permanent injunction is still being considered. The judge heard two days of testimony last week and has called for a resumption in October.

Wheeling cuts ribbon on new fire department headquarter building

WHEELING, W.Va. — The Wheeling Fire Department is finally moving into a new, state-of-the-art facility.
The city cut the ribbon for its new headquarter building Wednesday.
The new building, which is located at 1700 Wood Street, is a $9 million, 24,86-square-foot structure. It replaces the old headquarter building in Center Wheeling that was demolished last year. It had been where the department worked out of since 1978.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — There was a combination of joy and relief last Saturday after Marshall picked up the first win of the 2025 season and the first for new head coach Tony Gibson with its 38-7 victory over Eastern Kentucky at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
“It was a great night in Huntington on Saturday,” Gibson said. “I thought our kids played extremely well on all sides of the ball and did some really good things. We just need to keep getting better.”

Smith says $50 million gift to Marshall is part of his duty to help others

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — On Tuesday, it was announced that Marshall University President and his wife Alys would be gifting the university $50 million — the largest financial contribution in the institution’s history.
The contribution will help further fund the Marshall For All program. Marshall For All was launched in 2023 with a goal of giving everyone interested in college a chance to obtain a four-year degree without debt.

DEP to hold public meeting on power plant permits in Mingo County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public hearing in person Thursday in Mingo County to listen and offer more information about two proposed power plants for the county.
The two plants being proposed would be powered by natural gas. One would be located in the Wharncliff area and the other in the Holden area near the Logan County border. The public meeting is to be held at the Harless Center in Gilbert starting at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Environmental groups mount a challenge to data center power permit

DAVIS, W.Va. — A coalition of environmental organizations is challenging the permit issued by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for the development of a data center in Tucker County and the power plant nearby to produce the electricity to energize the facility. The permit was approved for Virginia based Fundamental Data’s Ridgeline Development to operate the gas fired power plant near the community of Davis.

Nucor Steel to begin hiring soon for entry-level positions

APPLE GROVE, W.Va. — Nucor has already hired 350 workers at its sprawling steel plant under construction in the Mason County community of Apple Grove.

Belle police chief sent termination letter as criminal investigation continues

BELLE, W.Va. — Mayor David Fletcher says he’s sent a termination letter to Police Chief Robert Glenn.

“I actually sent him a termination letter this past month,” Fletcher said at Tuesday night’s Belle Town Council meeting.
Fletcher said Glenn has asked for a civil service hearing.
“The hearing will be held on September 29th at 10 o’clock,” Fletcher said.
Glenn has been been on administrative leave for several months as part of an ongoing criminal investigation,
