West Virginia Supreme Court Refuses to Play Ball

The West Virginia Supreme Court’s refusal this week to answer a certified question from the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, concerning the role of prescription drug sales in the state’s opioid epidemic, is like the kid in right field who doesn’t want the ball hit to him. Nervous, perhaps scared of dropping the ball, he backs away from responsibility. That’s not unlike what the majority did here. It’s disappointing and it’s a disservice to the people of West Virginia.

2025 WVSSAC H.S. softball regional matchups

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Thirty-two sectional champions have qualified for the WVSSAC Regional Softball tournaments. Best-of-three series play can begin Monday, May 19. Regional champions advance to the state tournament at Little Creek Park in South Charleston. The double-elimination state tournament will be played May 28-31.

Kanawha County BOE next to seek legal guidance over Morrisey’s executive order on vaccinations

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –– The Kanawha County Board of Education wants to move forward with legal help in determining what to do if a student enrolls in a Kanawha County School without the mandatory vaccinations.

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — The FBI has released a flyer for a missing woman from West Virginia.
Gretchen Fleming, of Vienna, went missing two years ago after last being seen leaving in Parkersburg on December 4, 2022.

Huntington Mayor gives update on low-barrier shelter; announces pilot project to help with housing

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –The new Huntington Homeless Services Hub is making progress after receiving funding to get the project started to help combat the homelessness issue surrounding the city.
Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell told city council at Monday’s meeting that they have signed the memorandum of understanding with Valley Health Systems for them to be the lead partner for the shelter.

Health Department votes down amendment to allow casino to have designated smoking area

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –The Kanawha-Charleston Board of Health voted down a motion to amend the Clean Indoor Air Regulation Thursday afternoon that would have allowed Mardi-Gras Casino and Resort to have a designated area for smoking.
This was in response to the board’s 30-day public comment period, that ended on May 2nd, after the casino showed the board a detailed proposal of the construction of a separated area that would allow smoking only. It would have excluded vapes and cigars.

Huggins stepping down as Preston County clerk

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — Preston County Clerk Linda Huggins has announced her plans to retire at the end of July after serving as clerk since 2011.
Huggins said after seeing some close to her die in recent months, she realizes she wants to take time to enjoy her family.

Former Southern Regional lieutenant sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for trying to cover up inmate’s death

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former supervisor at the Southern Regional Jail has been sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison for covering up the 2022 beating death of jail inmate Quantez Burks.

Chad Lester, 35, a former lieutenant at the jail, was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin after being convicted in January on two counts of tampering with a witness and one count of lying to the FBI.

Crites family cleared of any criminal wrongdoing

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Three individuals who formerly owned and operated of one of the state’s largest hardwood businesses have been cleared of all criminal charges.
