New steps taken to secure Mononongalia County classrooms this year

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —  The school year in Monongalia County will start with a School Safety Officer available for all buildings in the county. The program is a partnership between the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, the Monongalia County Board of Education and the county commission.

Putnam County man sentenced for employment tax crimes

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Putnam County will be spending some time behind bars for his role in an employment tax fraud scheme.
Dean E. Dawson, 65, of Hurricane, was sentenced Monday to one year and six months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
Court documents show that Dawson, who operated the real estate appraisal business Real Property Consulting Group LLC, withheld employment taxes from the business’ employees from 2015-2022. During this time, Dawson also willfully paid to

Tucker County Commission defends new EMS fee amid lawsuit

PARSONS, W.Va. — Tucker County Commission President Michael Rosenau says the county needs to be able to have ample ambulance services for its residents and visitors.
The county recently enacted a two percent EMS fee, which did not go over well with those in charge of the Tucker-based Timberline Mountain.
Timberline Mountain Operations, Timberline Property Management, and Valley Scenic View LLC., have filed suit against the county.

Crash on I-64 westbound closes two lanes

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. –Two westbound lanes are closed on I-64 in South Charleston following a two-vehicle crash.
The crash occurred at mile marker 54, near the McCorkle Avenue exit a little after 2 p.m. The crash has closed down the middle and fast lanes, according to Kanawha County 911.
There is no word on possible injuries.

Two dead and three wounded in Fayette County shooting

MOUNT CARBON, W.Va. — An shooting incident Monday morning in Fayette County left two people dead and three with gunshot wounds.
Fayette County Sheriff Jess McMullen said his deputies were dispatched to a call involving shots fired and a gunman at large in the Mount Carbon community. Along with those deputies members of the State Police, Montgomery City Police, and the Natural Resources Police all responded to the scene.

Belt fire creates difficult circumstances for fire fighters in Marshall County

BENWOOD, W.Va. — Eleven fire departments in Marshall and Ohio Counties responded to a blaze at the Ohio County mine Sunday evening. The fire was situated in the operation’s belt line and coal house, both posed difficult challenges to fire fighters.
“There was actually the belt line and the coal house had some fire as well. Once they got the belt line out, they focused on the coal house,” said Tom Hart, Emergency Services Director for Marshall County.

Lawsuit challenging governor’s executive order on vaccines is revived

A lawsuit challenging Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s directive to allow religious exemptions to vaccination requirements has been filed again.
The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia and Mountain State Justice filed a new version of the legal challenge after it was dismissed on technical grounds last month.
