WVU start-up, Iconic Air acquired by Japanese tech company

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It started in a townhouse after their graduation from West Virginia University and is now a global sustainability software company. Iconic Air has been acquired by Tokyo-based Asuene, Inc. to lead their Asuene USA operation.
On WAJR’s “Talk of the Town,” Iconic Air co-founder and CEO James Carnes reflected back on their beginnings at Iconic EDU, a STEM education platform, to being included in the business incubator on the WVU campus, Vantage Ventures, in Morgantown.

Trial begins Monday for man accused of killing a woman and throwing body in a well

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man will stand trial Monday for a four-year-old murder case.
Michael Wayne Smith is accused of murdering Cheyenne Johnson, of Jackson County, in 2021 and disposing her body in a well. He faces a number of charges, which include first-degree murder and concealment of a dead body.
Smith most recently appeared before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Kenneth Ballard on October 16 for a motions hearing.

Mountaineer Gas Company customers to see increase in monthly bills

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Customers of Mountaineer Gas Company will see an interim increase in their monthly bills beginning November 1.
Vice President of Gas Supply and Technical Services Thomas Westfall said gas utilities are required by the state Public Service Commission to submit a filing on or before August 1 to adjust their purchased gas cost rates. These rates will apply for the next year, from November through October 2026.

Mountaineers keep pace atop the Big 12 with 2-0 win over Oklahoma State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia remained unbeaten in Big 12 play and they kept hopes alive to win the Big 12 regular season championship with a 2-0 win over Oklahoma State on Senior Day at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (12-2-3, 7-0-3 Big 12) outshot the Cowgirls (4-12-2, 0-9-1) 27-1 and held a 13-2 edge on corner kicks in a match that was dominated by the home team from the opening whistle.

Morgan County Schools working on attendance numbers

BERKELEY SPRINGS. W.Va. — Morgan County Schools set a goal to have fewer than 15 percent of students chronically absent. No school has hit it in the first quarter.
A student is considered chronically absent if they miss more than 10% of the school year.
So far in the district as a whole, there has been a 17.11 percent rate of chronic absenteeism during the first nine weeks or quarter of school

Another case about religious exemptions to vaccines seems headed to Supreme Court

Another case focused on whether West Virginia’s religious freedoms law applies to mandatory school vaccinations could be headed to the state Supreme Court.
This one involves nine families in Berkeley County who want their children’s religious exemptions to be honored by the public school system. The families were denied a temporary injunction by Berkeley Circuit Judge Michael Lorensen, and their lawyer filed a notice of appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Trio of donations total $1 million for state’s virtual pantries

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Communities in Schools virtual pantries, which serve public school students across West Virginia, will be receiving a donation of $1 million to better the operations.
The donations come from Shawn and Angela Ball of L&S Toyota in Beckley, the Pack Family Foundation and the Wing 2 Wing Foundation are putting up the funds that will ensure each public school in the state will receive $1,500 to provide food, clothing and hygiene products for students.

Investigation underway in Huntington after shooting leaves two injured Saturday morning

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –Huntington Police are investigating after a shooting left two people injured Saturday morning.
The shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m. in the 800 block of 20th street.
According to police, they found two men with gunshot wounds when they arrived on scene. Both are currently being treated for their injuries.
HPD also said they believe a vehicle that is believed to have been connected to the shooting was later involved in a crash around 20th and 12 Avenue. One person fled
