Huntington police make arrest in deadly Tuesday shooting

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A Huntington man has been arrested after he allegedly shot and killed a man on 6th Avenue Tuesday.

Carson Scott Jeffers, 62, of Huntington, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first degree murder.
Jeffers is accused of shooting and killing Michael Christian, 60, of Huntington, at around 9:45 a.m. outside Christian’s residence in the 500 block of 6th Avenue.

Attorney general asks for vaccine exemption cases to be consolidated

West Virginia’s attorney general is asking to consolidate two court cases about religious exceptions to school vaccine requirements.

Attorney General J.B. McCuskey filed the motion to consolidate earlier this week.
One case, in Raleigh County, was filed by parents who are asserting that the school system should honor religious exemptions to vaccination requirements. Late last month, Circuit Judge Michael Froble granted those families a preliminary injunction.

WVU students settling in as fall semester begins

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fall semester classes are underway at West Virginia University.
Classes began Wednesday morning.
The freshmen class is expected to end up around 4,500 students.
Freshman Maria Burnell, who came to Morgantown from Youngstown, Ohio, said she’s looking forward to meeting new people.
“I didn’t have a great time in my hometown so I’m excited to meeting different kinds of people,” Burnell told WAJR Radio News.

West Virginia gets a step closer to federally funded broadband expansion

Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that West Virginia’s final proposal for federally-funded broadband expansion is open for public comment, a milestone that the governor characterized as showing the goal is in sight.
The proposal is intended to serve all locations eligible for BEAD funding in West Virginia — about 74,000 locations, including unserved, underserved, and community anchor institutions.

Kanawha County fugitive accused of fleeing from deputies arrested

CEDAR GROVE, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man that was said to flee from deputies on Monday is now in custody.

Timothy Wayne Belcher Sr., 65, of Hico, was arrested on outstanding felony warrants Tuesday. Those warrants include burglary, grand larceny, and conspiracy.
Police in Cedar Grove responded to a 911 call at the Go Mart at around 6:30 Monday night when they released Belcher was wanted. The called Kanawha County deputies to assist with the search.

Jobs report shows overall decline in employment, leaves WV Chamber of Commerce concerned

CHARLESTON, W.Va — Concerns are growing after a Workforce West Virginia report revealed a decline of more than 7,000 civilian jobs and a total employment decrease of more than 4,000 in the state.
