Training storms carry the potential for flooding in parts of West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service warns rainfall could become intense in some parts of West Virginia in the next 12 to 24 hours.
There are flood watches in place for counties of the southern West Virginia coalfields for this afternoon and tonight. However, Meteorologist Gabe Wawrin with the Charleston Weather Bureau said it’s an alert to just be aware of the weather situation.

Transgender athlete qualifies for two events in state track championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A transgender high school athlete has qualified to compete in the West Virginia High School State Track & Field Championships. Becky Pepper-Jackson, a biological boy who has identified as a girl since third grade and has taken puberty-blocking medication, secured spots in two events in next week’s girls state meet.

Marshall forms search committee to assist in search for next athletic direct

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — An 11-member committee made up of Marshall University administrators, coaches, former athletes and others was formed to conduct the search for the university’s next athletic director.
The committee is seeking a replacement for current athletic director Christian Spears. The university announced April 29 that Spears’ current contract would not be renewed when it expires next February.

Golf cart erupts into flames shortly after being purchased; house damaged

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — A Fairmont house fire Monday morning is being blamed on an electric golf cart purchased hours before.
Members of the Valley Volunteer Fire Department were called to 800 block of the Market Street Extension at 10:46 a.m. and found the home to be on fire with what was thought to be a side-by-side, according to Deputy Chief Zac Eakle.

Marsh says Biden’s recently-diagnoses cancer is aggressive

Over the weekend, former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer.

Dr. Clay Marsh, chancellor and executive dean for health sciences at WVU, says while prostate cancer typically has good treatment options, this is scary news for the 82-year-old.
“Even though there’s good treatment, it’s not good news that he (Biden) has metastatic prostate cancer,” Marsh said Monday morning on MetroNews Midday.

Overdose deaths in West Virginia ease while questions swirl about federal funding for relief programs

West Virginia received welcome news last week with provisional data showing that overdose deaths in the state declined by 43.5% in the last year.
Close observers credited a range of reasons for the decline. But among the top reasons cited has been increasing availability of naloxone, an opioid antagonist that blocks the effects of opioids like heroin, fentanyl and prescription pain medications.

Tractor trailer leaves damage at Kanawha County cemetery

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police are searching for the driver of a tractor trailer damaged part of the Spring Hill Cemetary in Kanawha County.
Investigators say that the tractor trailer drove into a very narrow, dead-end road on Sunday, leaving behind tracks in the grass and wall damage. Several headstones were also overturned.
The driver abandoned the trailer and left in the tractor.
Crews pulled the abandoned trailer out of the cemetery backwards down a narrow road.
