Mountaineers blank Akron 3-0 to collect first win of the season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — With the field tilted entirely in their favor for all ninety minutes, the WVU women’s soccer team collected their first victory of the season with a 3-0 shutout over Akron in the second half of a men’s and women’s doubleheader at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (1-1) did not surrender a shot or a corner kick to the Zips (1-1-1) and they broke the game open with a pair of goals early in the second half.

Kanawha County Schools see decline in chronic absenteeism rates; sees growth within schools

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. –The state’s largest county has seen a continued decline in its chronic absenteeism rate since implementing a countywide system.
On Thursday, the Kanawha County Board of Education heard from the director of attendance and social services Kim Legg about the decline in the rate and the growth they have seen from multiple schools in the county. She also highlighted the efforts her department has made to ensure the number continues to decline.

Pozos hat trick leads No. 16 WVU to season-opening 5-2 win over Manhattan

Marshall turns attention to opener at No. 5 Georgia

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall’s football season opener at fifth-ranked Georgia is nine days away, and Thundering Herd first-year head coach Tony Gibson says the focus from his team is colored Bulldog red and black.
“We’ve moved on to Georgia,” Gibson said. “We’re going to have a mock game this Friday in order to be ready for next week. It’s time to go.”
Next Saturday’s game kicks off at 3:30 pm at 93,000-seat Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The game will be shown nationally

McDaniel to serve as state health officer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On Thursday, West Virginia Secretary of Health Dr. Arvin Singh appointed Dr. Mark McDaniel to serve as the acting state health officer for the state Department of Health.

Charleston man throws bag of fentanyl at officers during traffic stop

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston man is facing charges after getting in a physical altercation with officers Thursday morning and exposing them to fentanyl.
Charleston Police initiated a traffic stop at the entrance of Orchard Manor, Griffin Drive just after 11:30.

Log truck brings down lines and cripples traffic for the afternoon in Upshur County

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. –An oversized log truck created havoc for motorists Thursday afternoon in Upshur County.
Upshur County Sheriff Mike Coffman said the driver of the log truck was travelling on Route 20 north near Buckhannon Thursday afternoon.
