Pendleton sweeps regional, clinches state tournament berth

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Top-ranked Pendleton County received a pair of impressive pitching performances and they scored in eight of their ten innings at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Tucker County to claim the Class A Region II title. The Wildcats defeated the Mountain Lions 9-1 in six innings and 13-0 in five innings to secure a spot in next week’s state tournament.
Pendleton (29-2) will play at the state level for the first time since 2015.

Lincoln County fisherman hauls in a new state record black crappie

HARTS, W.Va. — Jerry Porter of Harts, W.Va. has caught some big crappie while fishing at Wayne County’s East Lynn Lake, but none could compare to the one he caught while he and some buddies were there back on May 7th.
“We just decided to go crappie fishing. We go there a lot. We were using minnows and jig heads. Man, we were just lifting the crappie and then I hooked the big one,” Jerry explained in an interview about his record catch for West Virginia Outdoors.

Noem’s Gaffe on Habeas Corpus a Problem

Gaffes are unfortunate. They embarrass. They make one cringe – whether from committing them or simply witnessing them. Sympathy and empathy are appropriate responses to those who err. But sometimes, gaffes expose something deeper, something that needs fixing.

DNR hears from community on Forks of Coal Natural Area “Master plan”

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia DNR held a public meeting Tuesday evening in regard to the master plan for the Forks of Coal Natural Area in Kanawha County.
Residents were able to stop by the Claudia L. Workman Wildlife Education Center in Alum Creek and were able to comment on what they wanted to see in the future at the facility.

Jefferson outlasts Spring Mills 8-6 in contest with seven home runs

SPRING MILLS, W.Va. — The Jefferson Cougars claimed their third region title over the last four seasons Tuesday with an 8-6 victory over Spring Mills in a game that featured seven home runs between the two teams.
“These girls can all swing the bat. We work on it so much,” Jefferson head coach Joseph Rummel said. “Certain pitches, and it’s just clicking.”
The first baserunner for either team came when the Cougars’ Brooke Allen led off the top of the second inning with a double.

Morrisey requests removal of sodas from SNAP program

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Governor Patrick Morrisey has sent a formal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) waiver request to the federal government to take away soda from the program.

The SNAP program provides food benefits for low-income families for what is designed to be healthy food. Morrisey says nutritious items were always supposed to be what qualifying citizens were getting.

Morrisey appoints three to WVU Board of Governors

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — On Tuesday, Governor Patrick Morrisey appointed three new members to the West Virginia University Board of Governors.

Morrisey chose Paul A. Mattox, Jr., Charles Wilfong, and Terry Hauser.
Mattox, the former state transportation secretary and commissioner of highways, has served on the WVU Board of Governors before. He is being reappointed to a new seat after his previous seat was eliminated by recent legislation. Mattox holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering

Authorities looking for key missing items in Kanawha County homicide investigation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has discovered three missing pieces of evidence in a recent homicide.
Lenard Jackson
The remains of Lenard Pierre Jackson, 38, of Dundee Michigan, were found in mid-April over an embankment off Walnut Gap Road, right outside of Charleston.
The KCSO says a black Louis Vuitton jacket, a gold Rolex watch, and a gold necklace belonging to Jackson are missing. The necklace features an Arabic symbol meaning God.
