Grace period announced for some flood victims

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Residents in Marion and Ohio counties who are still working toward recovering from damages caused by the Father’s Day floods still have a chance to be recipients of low-interest disaster loans from the federal government.

AARP shines the light on unpaid caregivers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — One in every four West Virginia adults is serving as a primary caregiver to an aging loved one.

School Building Authority set to hear $170 million in funding requests

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Superintendents from 31 county school districts will make their best pitches for funding when they appear before the state School Building Authority Monday and Tuesday in Charleston.

The SBA is in its annual process of granting funding for “NEEDs grants.”
SBA Executive Director Andy Neptune said the total requests from the 31 counties are for more than $170 million. He said the SBA has $43.5 million to hand out.

Prosecutors to pursue enhanced penalties in Kanawha County murder

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Kanawha County murder case that stretched more than four years reached a conclusion with the conviction of Michael Smith on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Cheyenne Johnson last Thursday.

PEIA hits the road for public hearings on health insurance changes for next plan year

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State workers will get a chance to comment beginning Monday on the proposed changes to their health insurance through PEIA.
The PEIA Finance Board hits the road for public meetings, two a week for the next three weeks. The first stop is Monday night at the Highlands Event Center in Wheeling.
PEIA is proposing a 3% aggregate premium increase for both employees and employers and a $200 monthly spousal surcharge increase. The changes would begin next July 1.

Lawmakers begin monthly interims at Pipestem Resort State Park

PIPESTEM, W.Va. — State lawmakers are on the road for this month’s interim committee meetings taking up residence at Pipestem Resort State Park in Summers and Mercer counties.
Meetings begin Sunday. The three-day schedule includes several off-site tours.
Lawmakers will get a look at Bluestone Dam and take part in a walking tour of Hinton Sunday. The Joint Committee on Education will meet on the campus of Concord University Sunday. Committee members will also tour the campus.
