PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Longwall mining operations have resumed inside Core Natural Resources’ Leer South Mine in Barbour County.
Mining at the site was halted on January 13th due to an underground fire. Nobody was injured in the fire, but company officials made the decision to seal off the mine to starve the fire of oxygen. In a press relesae announcing the restart of operations, company officials said the equipment left underground during the abrupt end of operations had been recovered.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Powerful winds knocked off power to nearly 74,000 customers of Appalachian Power and Mon Power in West Virginia early Friday morning.
Appalachian Power reported nearly 45,000 customers without service as of 3:30 a.m.
There are more than 10,000 customers without service in Kanawha County. High outage numbers were also reported in Logan, Mingo, Wyoming, Raleigh and Putnam counties.

BLOOMERY, W.Va. — A man is dead after a Monday logging accident in Hampshire County.
According to the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office, Earl Hott, 53, of Ridgeley, died after a being struck by a large tree limb.
Witnesses told police that a tree Hott was cutting down cut backwards and struck a dead tree nearby. A large limb from the dead tree then broke loose and fell on Hott.
Hott died immediately from blunt force trauma.
The incident remains under investigation.

CYCLONE, W.Va. — A coal miner died Thursday morning after an incident at the Lower War Eagle mine in Wyoming County, according to a release from Governor Patrick Morrisey.
“Denise and I were deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a coal miner today at the Lower War Eagle mine in Wyoming County. Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, and coworkers during this sorrowful time,” said Morrisey in a statement provided Thursday evening.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An infrastructure report card for West Virginia issued this week didn’t have a glowing reflection on the state of things. However, one of those who helped put it together said there is room for hope.
Rodney Holbert is Co-Chair of the West Virginia Infrastructure Report Card. The state got a D+ overall rating. But Holbert said despite the poor mark, he’s optimistic.
