Vesterinen excited to return to action along defensive line

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Edward Vesterinen was set for his third season of extensive action along West Virginia’s defensive line last year.
A native of Helinski, Finland, Vesterinen played 112 defensive snaps over eight games as a true freshman, more than doubled his snap count to 242 on defense as a sophomore and started all 13 contests at defensive tackle in 2023.

Mingo County woman killed while crossing U.S. 119 in Kentucky

PIKE COUNTY, K.Y.— A Williamson woman died Thursday evening on U.S. 119 in Pike County, Kentucky.
According to Kentucky State Police, Meghan Jones, 36, was attempting to cross U.S. 119 in South Williamson, Kentucky when she was struck and killed by a vehicle traveling south.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Belfry Volunteer Fire Department and the Appalachian First Response Ambulance Service responded to the incident.

More site readiness grants awarded to business-ready locations

GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — Governor Patrick Morrisey was at Greenbrier Forrest State Park Friday announcing $525,000 of site readiness grants that span across six counties.
The awards announced are as follows:

$75,000 to the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Corporation to develop the Harts Run Site
$75,000 to the Randolph County Development Authority to support site readiness efforts for the Randolph Development District Industrial Park
$75,000 to the Mingo County

Smart aware of Marshall’s capabilities, but wants Bulldogs focused on themselves

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs again have national championship aspirations this fall, and the journey to reach that goal starts at home on Saturday.
The Bulldogs host Marshall Saturday at 3:30 p.m. inside 93,000-seat Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia.
Georgia hopes to continue a 31-game home win streak that ranks as the nation’s longest and began in 2019.

Former teacher and coach at Keyser High School facing multiple child pornography charges

KEYSER, W.Va. — A former employee in both Mineral and Grant counties is facing criminal charges from at least one incident.
Travis Scott Liller, 34, formerly worked at Keyser High School as a driver education teacher. According to court records in Mineral County, the former coach and athletic director has been charged with three counts of distributing or exhibiting material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The charges stem from an incident in March.

First early bear season opens Labor Day weekend

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The first hunting season of the fall in West Virginia opens up this weekend. The early bear season starts Saturday and runs for nine days in Mingo, McDowell, Wyoming, and Logan Counties in the southern coalfields. Hunters have the opportunity to kill a bear, with a firearm, in those counties as a way to hopefully reduce the number of bears in that part of the state.

PSC approves increase for Appalachian Power but says utility can’t collect it yet

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Public Service Commission has turned down more than half of Appalachian Power Company’s request for a $250.5 million base rate increase.

The PSC approved $76.1 million in an order issued late Thursday and at the same time told the utility it cannot collect the increase through traditional means.
“The companies will continue to bill customers at the current rates so there is no increase on customer bills resulting from this decision,” the PSC said.

Convicted Morgantown murderer denied mercy after 10 minutes of deliberations

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The jury that convicted Jonathan Ramirez of first degree murder has denied mercy to the Texas resident Friday.
Jonathan Ramirez (WVRJA)
Ramirez, 24, of Watauga, Texas, will spend the rest of his life in prison for the January 2024 murder of Learfield Sports employee Jacob Lough.

Poll respondents say Justice is best governor of their lifetime, and his popularity still holds up

About a third of West Virginians say Jim Justice is the best governor of their lifetime, and Justice also receives the most favorable approval ratings among the state’s current lineup of top political figures.

West Virginia University football fans say they’re ready to forgive Rich Rodriguez, who will return to the Mountaineer sideline this weekend.
